Gophers Excel in Latest Graduation Rate Data

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the second-straight year, the University of Minnesota announced that its student-athletes have posted a program-record 94 percent graduation rate, as measured by the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR).
Gopher Athletics has now recorded its three-highest GSR statistics in school history over the last three years with 94 percent in both 2019 and 2020 and a 93 percent in 2018.
This year's GSR primarily focuses on the six-year cohort who came to the 'U' as freshman in 2013. Minnesota's 94 percent GSR rate is tied for the second-highest among Big Ten institutions with Illinois, Michigan and Nebraska, trailing only Northwestern at 98 percent.
The GSR shows the percentage of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree within six years of starting school. It represents data from first-time freshmen, student-athletes who entered at midyear, and student-athletes who transferred into the University of Minnesota between 2009 and 2012. It excludes student-athletes who transfer from the university in good academic standing.
"Our student-athletes continue to excel in their given sport, as well as the classroom and we applaud their dedication to earning a college degree while representing the University of Minnesota," said JT Bruett, director of the Lindahl Academic Center. "Gopher Athletics is incredibly fortunate to be led by administrators and coaches who support the academic mission of the University and our student-athletes."
The NCAA also released Federal Graduation Rates (FGR) in its report, which categorizes student-athletes who transfer from or leave their initial school for any reason as non-graduates, even if they leave in good academic standing or subsequently graduate from another institution. For 2013-14, Gopher Athletics had a 82 percent grad rate using this measure. In the four-class average from 2010-2013, Minnesota also ranked second in the Big Ten at 82 percent. Northwestern also took the top spot at 92 percent.
