MINNEAPOLIS - Former University of Minnesota women's soccer standout Tori Burnett has been named assistant coach of Minneapolis City Soccer Club of the National Premier Soccer League, as announced by the club on Monday. Burnett joins current Gophers' Director of Goalkeeping Alli Lipsher as a member of the Minneapolis City SC coaching staff.
On Oct. 28 of last week, Lipsher was announced as the club's first-ever Director of Goalkeeping. With her hire, Lipsher became the first woman to coach in the NPSL North Conference and one of a very few to ever hold a coaching position in the league. Now, Burnett can add her name to that list as well.
Founded in 2003, the NPSL is a semi-professional league officially affiliated with the United States Adult Soccer Association. The NPSL is comprised of 96 teams stemming from four geographic regions and 14 total conferences. Nicknamed the Crows, Minneapolis City SC was established in 2016 and competes within the North Conference of the Midwest Region. Each of the last two seasons, Minneapolis City SC has claimed the NPSL North Conference title.
Having competed for the Gophers as a defender from 2014-17, Burnett miraculously started 64 consecutive games to close out her Minnesota career. During that time, she was named Second Team All-Big Ten (2017) and played a crucial role in Minnesota's 2016 Big Ten Regular Season and Tournament Championships, coming away with the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award and All-Tournament Team honors in the latter.
As a four-year letterwinner, the Colorado Spring, Colo. native totaled 5,805 minutes across 65 career games, finishing with one goal, four assists and six points.
Upon graduating from Minnesota with a degree in physiology in May of 2018, Burnett joined the women's soccer staff at Macalester College as an assistant coach, where she spent the previous two seasons. Burnett also served two years as a full-time administrator and coach with the Blaine Soccer Club.
