Duo Earns WCHA Weekly Honors

Lauren Bench and Grace Zumwinkle have been honored as WCHA Players of the Week.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Senior goaltender Lauren Bench and senior forward Grace Zumwinkle have been honored as WCHA Players of the Week following the Golden Gophers' season-opening series split with Ohio State at Ridder Arena last weekend.
Bench picked up her first WCHA Goaltender of the Week award of her Gopher career and seventh overall WCHA weekly award after combining for 69 saves on 71 shots faced in two games against Buckeyes last weekend. The Eagan, Minn., native earned a 36-save shutout in a 4-0 win in game one before following up with 33 saves on 35 shots faced in a 2-1 loss in game two. For the weekend, Bench led the WCHA with a .972 save percentage, 69 saves, and a 1.02 goals against average. She was one of two WCHA netminders to earn a shutout over the weekend.
Zumwinkle, this week's WCHA Forward of the Week, received her eighth WCHA weekly award of her career after scoring three of Minnesota's five goals against Ohio State last weekend. The Excelsior, Minn., native scored the game-winner just 28 seconds into the Gophers' season-opener before extending the team's lead to three late in the third period on the way to a 4-0 win. She then scored Minnesota's lone goal in the team's 2-1 loss in game two. Zumwinkle led the WCHA with three goals and 15 shots on goal during opening weekend. Minnesota's active career scoring leader, Zumwinkle now ranks 14th among all-time Gophers with 70 career goals.
The No. 3 Gophers are slated to travel to Duluth, Minn., for a Friday-Saturday series with No. 6 Minnesota Duluth this week. Puck drop is set for 6:07 p.m. CT Friday and 3:07 p.m. CT Saturday at AMSOIL Arena.
