Gophers Win 2-1, Sweep Mavericks

Minnesota closed out the first half of the 2020-21 season with a sweep over Minnesota State.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 3 University of Minnesota women's hockey team skated to a 2-1 win over visiting Minnesota State to earn its second-straight WCHA sweep on Friday night at Ridder Arena.

Minnesota (5-1-0, 5-1-0 WCHA) took a 1-0 when Audrey Wethington scored her first collegiate goal at the 12:58 mark of the first period. A. Wethington stuffed the puck past Minnesota State goaltender Lauren Barbro off a feed from her sister Madeline Wethington and Olivia Knowles. Grace Zumwinkle then doubled the Gophers' lead with a power-play goal from Crystalyn Hengler and Emily Oden in the second stanza.

Minnesota State (1-5-0, 1-5-0 WCHA) answered with a goal from Brittyn Fleming with 29 seconds remaining in the middle frame, and the teams played a scoreless third period as the Gophers closed out the series sweep.

Makayla Pahl earned the win in net for the Maroon & Gold, making 18 saves in her first game of the season, while the Mavericks received 29 saves from Barbro. The Gophers had a 31-19 advantage in shots on goal after being out-shot 41-28 in game one of the series on Thursday despite winning 5-1.

Quotable
"Really good game tonight -- I thought our team played really well," head coach Brad Frost said. "We did a much better job without the puck and managing that better. We didn't give up too many quality chances. We had plenty of quality chances ourselves, but credit their goaltender who played really well. Overall, it was a great way to end the first half here. It's been tough. It's been hard. I'm really proud of our team and how they've been able to manage everything over the last few months. We're looking forward to our team getting away, spending some time with family, and coming back rejuvenated and hopefully starting up again here in January."

Notable
  • A. Wethington became the fourth Minnesota rookie to score her first collegiate goal, joining Anne Cherkowski, Abbey Murphy, and Josey Dunne.
  • Zumwinkle's goal marked her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
  • The Gophers went two-for-two tonight to improve to a perfect 16-for-16 on the penalty kill this season.
  • Minnesota extended its current winning streak against Minnesota State to 50-0-0, dating back to January 2010.
Up Next
Friday's game marked Minnesota's last game of the first half of the season. League play for the second half of the 2020-21 WCHA season will resume as early as Jan. 1, 2021. The post-holiday league schedule, along with the format for the 2021 WCHA Final Faceoff, will be announced at a later date.
