MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior golfer Angus Flanagan has been named one of 15 members of the Great Britain and Ireland squad for the 2021 Walker Cup, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews has announced.

Scheduled to take place May 8-9, 2021, at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla., the competition takes place every two years and pits 10 amateurs from the United States against those from Great Britain and Ireland.

Should he be selected, it is believed Flanagan would join John Harris (1993, '95, '97, '01) as the only Gophers to ever compete in the event.

"We have selected a talented group of players to work with in preparation for the match against the United States of America next year," GB&I captain Stuart Wilson said. "We will be closely monitoring their form and results in a number of important events over the coming months while other players still have time to play their way into contention before we finalize the team which will travel to Florida."

According to the Walker Cup website, each of the two competition days features foursomes (alternate-shot) matches in the morning followed by singles matches in the afternoon. On Saturday, there are eight singles matches, while all 10 players from each side compete in singles on Sunday. One full point is awarded for each victory, while a half-point is earned for matches that are all square after 18 holes. As the two-time defending champion, the United States needs 13 points to retain the Cup while GB&I needs 13.5 points to capture it.

Minnesota's first All-American in six years, Flanagan posted a 69.33 stroke average through five tournaments last fall. He tallied three top-10 finishes including medalist honors at the Macdonald Cup while also placing second at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate just over one week later.

In addition to his scoring average, the Woking, England, native led the Golden Gophers this fall in percentage of scores counted (96.7), rounds under par (11), tournaments leading the team (4), top-10 finishes (3) and top-20 finishes (3).

This summer, he has won medalist honors at the Western Amateur Championship, Minnesota State Open and Minnesota Golf Champions. He made his PGA TOUR debut at the 3M Open in July thanks to a sponsor's exemption following his win at the State Open.
