Fiser Tosses Third Career No-No, Gophers Split Day

2/21/2020 3:26:00 PM | Softball

The No. 17/15 University of Minnesota Gophers had a comeback effort fall short against Texas State, (3-2), before topping Tulsa, (11-0), in five innings behind Amber Fiser's no-hitter.

Fiser's no-hitter was her first since a perfect game at Purdue on April 27, 2018. She tossed four complete game one-hitters in her All-American 2019 season.

Game One: Texas State 3, Minnesota 2
The Gophers out-hit Texas State, eight hits to three, but aggressive baserunning helped notch three runs for the Bobcats, enough to hold off a late Minnesota push.

Texas State scored twice in the second. They were aided by a Minnesota error and passed ball to make an RBI-double to center enough to get the first run in. After a runner moved to third on a groundout, an RBI-single to shallow center brought another one in.

In the third inning the Bobcats placed the lead off runner with a walk. She moved all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a sacrifice squeeze a play later.

MaKenna Partain cut into the deficit with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. The shot to right center was her first of the season.

Autumn Pease kept the Gophers in striking distance in the circle. She went seven innings with a season high seven strikeouts while only allowing three hits and two earned runs. She retired the Texas State batters in order in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Down to their final out, Carlie Brandt lined a double to right center for the Gophers. Natalie DenHartog laced a single to left right after to score Brandt, but was gunned down in a pickle for the final out of the game.

Game Two: Minnesota 11, Tulsa 0 (Five innings)
Fiser tossed a five inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts and only allowed two baserunners. Meanwhile, the Gophers offense caught fire with 11 runs on 10 hits.

Partain brought in the first run of the day as Kianna Jones slid perfectly under a tag at home. Partain got the scoring rolling again in the fourth inning with a double to right center to once again score Jones.

The Gophers loaded the bases in the fourth and Emily Hansen drew a walk for the easiest RBI of her 10 this season.

Katelyn Kemmetmueller followed with an RBI-single and Sydney Strelow capped off a five run fourth inning with a two-RBI single up the middle.

Five Gophers reached base either by walk or hit by pitch to start the fifth inning with Jones scoring on a wild pitch. DenHartog put the cherry on top with a grand slam to make it 11-0 gophers. She has a team leading 12 RBIs this season.

Fiser struck out the final two batters of the afternoon to complete 31st no-hitter in Minnesota softball history. She moves to 4-4 on the season.

Quoteable
"This feels absolutely amazing," Amber Fiser said. "The offense came out and was having a lot of fun today. It was good to see them succeed and put 11 runs on the board. Then I had the defense go out there and make plays behind me."

Noteable
Amber Fiser now has three career no-hitters. Her last no-hitter came in a perfect game at Purdue on Apr. 27, 2018. She tossed four complete game one-hitters in her All-American 2019 season. There have now been 31 no-hitters thrown in Minnesota softball history.
