Meyer Registers Double-Digit Ks as Gophers Fall to TCU

MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher Baseball program dropped their 2020 home opener at U.S. Bank Stadium on Saturday night, falling to the Horned Frogs of TCU, 12-0.
Although the first game of Minnesota's 2020 home slate featured a highly anticipated Max Meyer start, the Gophers were ultimately unable to secure a win for the crowd. TCU got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, using a two-run homer to left-center to open the scoring.
Despite giving up a home run in the first, Meyer sat three Horned Frog batters down swinging in the game's opening frame. That would be the trend for Meyer, who baffled hitters at times on Saturday.
Meyer would finish with ten strikeouts in the contest, exiting with two outs in the sixth inning in favor of lefty reliever Danny Kapala. By the time the sixth inning was through, the Horned Frogs had used an RBI double to right field to push their lead to 4-0.
With Meyer out of the game, TCU extended their lead throughout the final three innings of the game. The Horned Frogs added two more runs in the seventh and eighth innings and another four in the ninth before prevailing with a 12-0 final.
Meyer (1-1) received his first loss of the young season, lasting 5 2/3 innings with four earned runs, four hits, two walks and ten strikeouts. Kapala, Nolan Burchill and Bennett Theisen all worked in relief of Meyer in the game, with the latter Gopher making his collegiate debut against TCU.
TCU starter Johnny Ray earned the win, throwing a complete game shutout with two hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.
Andrew Wilhite and Otto Grimm were the only Gophers to register hits on Saturday night, with the duo lacing singles through the right side in the first and ninth innings, respectively.
Quotable
"We got behind 2-0 against a good baseball team. Their pitcher did an outstanding job of mixing three pitches and pitching down in the zone," said head coach John Anderson. "It's a long year. Everybody understands that. We just need to play wish passion and compete and try to do a better job of getting a lead in the game and gaining some momentum."
Notable
Meyer racked up double-digit strikeouts in his first home outing of the season, punching out ten TCU batters while also allowing a career-high four earned runs in the contest.
