Gophers Run-Rule Georgia Southern, Fall to Auburn

2/29/2020 7:18:00 PM | Softball

The No. 18/18 University of Minnesota Gophers topped Georgia Southern 14-3 in six innings and fell to Auburn, 5-1, in a rematch of last night's battle. The Gophers move to 11-7 on the season after the split.

Game One: Minnesota 14, Georgia Southern 3 (6)
Four Gophers recorded multiple hits as the offense exploded for a season high 14 hits and 14 runs against Georgia Southern. Natalie DenHartog, Katelyn Kemmetmueller and Brooke Vander Heide each had three hits. DenHartog and Sydney Strelow each notched three RBIs while Kemmetmueller launched two home runs and put up a career high five RBIs.

Minnesota actually trailed early as Georgia Southern put up two runs in the bottom of the first and led until the third inning. DenHartog moved Minnesota into the lead with her fourth home run of the season in the third.

The Gophers put separation on in the fifth inning. DenHartog opened up the frame with a double down the left field line. She finished the game a triple away from a cycle. Emily Hansen followed with a walk and Strelow moved a run across with a single to left.

Kemmetmueller quickly made it 7-2 with her first home run of the season on a launch to center. The Strelow, Kemmetmueller combo kept rolling in the sixth. Strelow brought in two runs with a double to right center and Kemmetmueller followed with her second home run of the game. It was the second time in Kemmetmueller's career that she recorded two home runs in the same game.

Vander Heide plated another run for the Gophers later in the frame. She had her best performance in the Maroon and Gold with three singles, one RBI and one walk. Not to be left out, MaKenna Partain brought in the final run of the game for the Gophers.

Georgia Southern plated one run in the bottom of the sixth on a double steal. Amber Fiser got the start and picked up the win for Minnesota. She went four innings with seven strikeouts and only allowed two hits. The two runs that came across while she was in the circle were not earned. Autumn Pease pitched the final two. She only allowed two hits, one run and recorded three strikeouts.

Game Two: Auburn 5, Minnesota 1
Partain recorded the Gophers line hit of the game on a solo shot home run in the third inning. She has four home runs on the season and leads the team with 18 RBIs.

Auburn took advantage of a pair of Minnesota runs in both the second and fourth to get on the scoreboard. The first came in the second inning when a double to right combined with a throwing error brought in two runs. Auburn tacked on a third run in the frame with a bloop single to the pitcher.

In the fourth inning, Partain went to make a close play when she scooped a grounder but her throw went errant allow a run to come home. Auburn tacked on one more in the frame with a hard single up the middle.

Fiser took the loss in the circle. She went 3.2 innings and gave up five hits and five runs including four earned runs. Pease finished the final 2.1 innings and only allowed one hit with no runs.

Quoteable
Head coach Jamie Trachsel on Georgia Southern… "The offense had one of their best performances throughout the lineup," Trachsel said. "Everybody contributed to the offense in the win. We also had good pitching from Amber (Fiser) and Autumn (Pease)."

On Auburn… "We made a couple mistakes defensively that really ran us out of two innings," Trachsel said. "That was the difference of the game."

Noteable
Both the Gophers 14 hits and 14 runs against Georgia Southern were team season highs.
