UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Sophomores Daniel Oturu and Marcus Carr combined for 52 points but the Minnesota men's basketball team's comeback effort came up short in a 83-77 defeat at No. 22/19 Penn State at a sold-out Bryce Jordan Center Saturday evening.
Minnesota fell to 6-7 in Big Ten play and 12-11 overall, while the Nittany Lions (18-5, 8-4) won their sixth straight game and snapped a five-game losing streak to the Gophers.
The Gophers, who were limited to just 22 points in the first half, scored 55 in the final period to nearly overcome a 19-point second-half deficit. Oturu's night was a career-high as the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award finalist posted his 13th double-double of the season.
A Gabe Kalscheur 3-pointer at the 4:48 mark made it a one-possession game at 71-68, but the Lions rattled off six straight points before the media timeout arrived to push the game out of reach.
Lamar Stevens led Penn State with 33 points.
The Gophers are back in action a week from Sunday, hosting Iowa at 12 p.m. CT.
