MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota finished out play at the Big Ten Match Play Championship Saturday in Palm Coast, Fla., losing 4-2 to Purdue in the morning before rallying for a 3-3 tie with Michigan State in the afternoon.
Junior Angus Flanagan went 2-0 on the day to complete a 3-0 weekend. He started the day with a back-and-forth, comeback win over Joe Weiler of Purdue. Weiler won the first hole, No. 10, while Flanagan took No. 11. Weiler then won holes 14 and 16 to lead by two, while Flanagan claimed No. 17 to cut the deficit in half. With just six holes left to play, Flanagan won No. 4, but Weiler regained the lead on No. 5. It was all Flanagan after that, though, as he closed it out by winning the final three holes to claim the 2&1 victory.
In the afternoon session, Flanagan trailed James Piot by two holes with just three left to play and the Gophers down 3-2 in the match as they headed to the fifth hole. Flanagan then won No. 5, 3-4, and equalized the match with a 5-6 advantage on No. 6. On the seventh and final hole, Flanagan posted a 5 to Piot's 7 to complete the comeback.
Freshman Harrison Arnold earned his first win of the weekend with a 5&4 victory over Purdue's Jason Hong. The match started on Hole 11, and Arnold took control early by winning holes 12-13. He gave a hole back on No. 15, but then won the next three holes to go up four. Hong won the second hole to cut the lead to three, but Arnold bounced back with wins on No. 3 and again on No. 6 to close out the matchup. In the afternoon, Arnold lost 4&2 to Michigan State's Andrew Walker.
Senior Thomas Longbella went 1-1 on the day, highlighted by a 4&3 win over MSU's Landon Ernst. Longbella led the entire way, jumping out to a four-hole lead within the first seven holes. Ernst won just one hole, but Longbella made that up later in the round. Also Saturday, Longbella lost 3&2 to Purdue's Andrew Farraye.
Freshman Connor Glynn joined Flanagan, Arnold and Longbella in registering wins on the weekend with a 3&1 win over Michigan State's Troy Taylor II. Similar to Longbella's victory, Glynn was in control throughout, including a stretch of four straight holes claimed between Nos. 12-15. Glynn led by five through 11 holes played, but Taylor kept in it and got to within two before Glynn captured the second-to-last hole to complete the win.
Senior Noah Rasinski and sophomore Lincoln Johnson each went 0-2 on the day, while junior Evan Long lost in his morning match with Purdue.
Minnesota now has just over a month off from competition. The Golden Gophers will be back in action March 16-17 at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
