Minnesota used a 6-3 win to complete a WCHA sweep on the road at Bemidji State on Saturday.
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Golden Gophers scored three third-period goals for the second-straight game as the No. 4 University of Minnesota women's hockey team broke open a tied game with three unanswered goals on the way to a 6-3 win and series sweep over Bemidji State on Saturday afternoon.
Minnesota (23-5-3, 15-5-2-1 WCHA) led 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 over the first two periods, but the Beavers answered each time to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the third period. However, Taylor Heise scored the eventual game-winner just 1:31 into the final stanza before Grace Zumwinkle and Kippin Keller added third-period tallies to seal the win.
Zumwinkle led the Maroon & Gold with three points (2g-1a) while Heise (1g-1a) and Sarah Potomak (1g-1a) also logged multiple points in the win. Sydney Scobee finished with 19 saves on 22 shots faced as the Gophers had a 29-22 advantage in shots on goal.
Bemidji State (14-15-3, 9-12-2-0) was led by a hat trick from Reece Hunt and 23 saves from Lauren Bench.
Quotable
"Solid win here on the road tonight, this is a tough place to play," head coach Brad Frost said. "The second period was kind of a crazy one for both teams, giving up goals and exchanging goals. Our team found a way there in the third to come out and score a quick one and then add to that and extend the lead. We just played really well down the stretch, which was big. This is a big six points on the road. We needed them. We're excited now to head home and have a weekend off and then gear up for the rest of the WCHA season."
Notable
With two regular-season games remaining, Minnesota is second in the WCHA regular-season standings at 15-5-2-1 with 48 points. Wisconsin leads the league with 49 points and four games remaining, and Ohio State (36 points and four games remaining) and Minnesota Duluth (35 points and four games remaining) round out the top four teams.
