Minnesota Closes Regular Season with Loss to Maryland

3/1/2020 6:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota (15-14, 5-13 B1G) closed out the regular season Sunday afternoon with a 99-44 loss to No. 7/7 Maryland (25-4, 16-2) at Williams Arena in front of a season-high crowd of 6,013.

Freshman Sara Scalia led the Golden Gophers with team-high 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers that give her 57 on the season. That moves her past Cassie VanderHeyden (56) for fourth most ever by a Gopher freshman.

Senior Taiye Bello pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go with seven points. It was her 15th game this year with at least 10 rebounds and the 43rd such game of her career. Four of her rebounds came on the offensive end, upping her season total to 110, tying for seventh most in a season at Minnesota.

Minnesota opened the game on a 6-1 run but Maryland used an ensuing 16-3 stretch to take control of the game.

The Terrapins led 30-13 after the first quarter and 45-19 at halftime.

The third quarter was more of the same as Maryland's 38 points in the frame were the most by an opponent this year. The Gophers did score 20 points of their own in the third, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers by freshman Jasmine Powell.

The six 3's made on the day for Minnesota jumped its season total to 218, the third highest in program history.

Maryland's defense clamped down even further in the fourth, outscoring Minnesota 16-5.

Six players reached double figures for the Terrapins, who clinched a share of the Big Ten title along with Northwestern with the victory. Taylor Mikesell was the team's top scorer at 22 points thanks to six 3-pointers.

With the regular season over, Minnesota now turns its attention to the Big Ten Tournament. The 11th-seeded Golden Gophers open play Wednesday in Indianapolis against 14th-seeded Penn State. Tipoff is scheduled for 25 minutes after the conclusion of game one, which starts at 1 p.m. CT.
