Gophers Fall to Buckeyes in OT

Minnesota dropped a 4-3 overtime decision in the semifinals of the WCHA Final Faceoff on Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 2 seed University of Minnesota women's hockey team dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to No. 3 seed Ohio State in the semifinals of the WCHA Final Faceoff on Saturday night at Ridder Arena.

Minnesota (27-6-3) led 1-0 after one period and held a 3-2 advantage after two periods, but Ohio State (23-8-6) tied the game late in the third period and Tatum Skaggs netted the game-winner at the 4:54 mark of overtime to earn a berth in Sunday's WCHA championship game for OSU. The Buckeyes will face No. 1 seed Wisconsin (28-4-3), which defeated No. 4 seed Minnesota Duluth (18-12-6) by a score of 4-1 in Saturday's first semifinal.

Amy Potomak scored the first two goals of the game, finding the back of the net at 4:33 of the opening period and giving the home team a 2-0 lead at the 3:04 mark of the second period. The Buckeyes got on the board just 1:22 later with a goal by Skaggs and tied the game at 2-2 with Jenn Gardiner's first of the game with 3:35 remaining in the second. Taylor Heise regained the lead for the Gophers late in the middle frame, but Gardiner netted her second of the game with 7:27 remaining before Skaggs netted the game-winner in overtime.

Sydney Scobee made 24 saves for the Maroon & Gold while OSU's Andrea Braendli recorded 38 saves as Minnesota had a 41-28 advantage in shots on goal for the game, but the Buckeyes had a 4-0 edge in overtime.

Quotable
"Not the result that we wanted, obviously," head coach Brad Frost said. "We were hoping and wanting to play for a championship tomorrow and we are not going to be able to do that, but I'm proud of our team. We played a pretty solid game, turned the puck over a couple times and couldn't get it out when we needed to there on a couple of their goals, including the one in overtime, but it's hockey. You can look back -- I'm sure they wanted different things to happen on their three goals against, and we obviously wanted different things to happen on the four goals against for us -- but I like how we played. Hopefully we get to extend our season and play again next weekend and learn from things a little bit."
