Sydney Scobee was named Minnesota's Breakthrough Female Athlete of the Year earlier this week.

MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota goaltender Sydney Scobee was named Minnesota's Breakthrough Female Athlete of the Year as Gopher Athletics held its annual Goldy Goldys student-athlete awards ceremony this week. Scobee was honored among her fellow Gophers after previously earning WCHA Goaltender of the Year honors and securing the WCHA Goaltending Champion title for her play during the 2019-20 season.

"I am humbled and honored to be receiving this year's Breakthrough Athlete of the Year award," Scobee said. "Thank you, Gopher Athletics, for giving all of us athletes the opportunity to play for this amazing university. To my coaches, thank you so much for all the courage and support throughout the last two years. You guys have been absolutely exceptional and some of the best coaches I've ever had."

After beginning her college career by spending two seasons at Vermont, Scobee joined the Maroon & Gold for the 2018-19 season and split time in net with Alex Gulstene. This season, Scobee played over 96% of Minnesota's total minutes, ranking second in the nation at 21:08:44 minutes played. She improved in every statistical category from 2018-19 to 2019-20, including ranking third in the NCAA with eight shutouts this season.

Scobee and the Gophers were poised to make an NCAA postseason run, beginning with an NCAA quarterfinal match-up with Ohio State scheduled for March 14, 2020, before the season ended on March 12, 2020, when the NCAA announced it was ceasing competitions and championships because of COVID-19 public health concerns.

Despite the premature ending to the season, Minnesota celebrated a successful 2019-20 campaign. The Maroon & Gold wrapped up the 23rd season of Gopher women's hockey as NCAA Tournament qualifiers and WCHA regular-season runners-up along with tying for third at the WCHA Final Faceoff. Minnesota ended the year with a record of 27-6-3 and saw six Gophers earn All-WCHA accolades, including Scobee.

A native of Minnetrista, Minn., Scobee became the first Gopher goaltender to earn a place on the All-WCHA First Team since Noora Raty picked up first-team honors in 2012-13. Scobee's numbers this season spoke for themselves as she also took home the league's goaltending title after leading the WCHA with a 1.63 goals against average, 17 wins, and six shutouts in 24 conference games.

Scobee's WCHA Goaltending Champion award put her in good company as she joined Jody Horak (2005), Kim Hanlon (2006), Alyssa Grogan (2009), and Noora Raty (2010 and 2013) among Minnesota's past recipients of the league's goaltending title.

For the season, Scobee went 26-6-3 with a 1.68 goals against average and .928 save percentage as one of 15 Gophers to play in all 36 games. Her eight shutouts tied for sixth in program history during a single season, and her 26-win season ranked sixth among all-time Gophers. Despite her individual success, she credits her teammates for making it all possible.

"To my teammates, thank you so much for everything over the last two years," Scobee said as she accepted her Gophers' Breakthough Athlete of the Year Award. "You guys have made my experience here so special. I definitely wouldn't be here without you guys. You guys all pushed me so hard in practice every day. I'm so proud of everything we accomplished this season, even though it was cut a little short at the end."

Scobee closed out her two-year career at Minnesota ranked fifth with a .927 career save percentage, sixth with a 1.71 career goals against average, seventh with 38 career wins, seventh with 1,110 career saves, and tied for seventh with 10 career shutouts among all-time Gopher goaltenders. She is set to graduate from the University of Minnesota with her degree in Human Resource Development.
