5/20/2020 10:00:00 AM | Tennis
University of Minnesota women's tennis standout Dalila Said garnered All-Big Ten honors, announced today by the conference office. Said, a redshirt freshman from Cairo, Egypt, is the lone Golden Gopher on the All-Big Ten team in just her first Minnesota season.
Said is the first Minnesota women's tennis player to earn the honor since the 2017-18 season, when Caroline Ryba claimed the feat. Most notably, Said is only the fifth freshman from Minnesota to be selected for the All-Big Ten Team, (Claudia Brisk: 1984, Sitinee Rangsithienchai: 1996, Valerie Vladea: 2001 and Angela Buergis: 2003).
This past season, Said held a 9-2 (1-1 B1G) singles record and 8-3 (1-0 B1G) doubles record. From Jan. 25 through Feb. 21, she went undefeated with seven straight wins. During that time, Said had a nonconference match clinching victory over Iowa and defeated foes from Gonzaga, UND, UNI, Marquette, Drake and Memphis.
In addition, senior Cammy Frei was also named Minnesota's Big Ten Sportsmanship award winner. Frei ended the year with 14 singles wins and 12 doubles wins. On March 10, the Winnetka, Ill., native was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week for her match clinching win over No. 21 Wisconsin.
