Winston DeLattiboudere and Sarah Werking are Minnesota's 2019-20 Big Ten Conference Outstanding Sportsmanship Award recipients.

MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota seniors Winston DeLattiboudere from football and Sarah Werking from women's cross country/track & field are Minnesota's 2019-20 Big Ten Conference Outstanding Sportsmanship Award recipients, the league announced Wednesday.

DeLattiboudere was the emotional leader of the Gopher defense last season. The unit yielded only 306.6 yards per game, which was its fewest since 1977. The Baltimore, Md., native recorded 30 tackles last season, forced two fumbles and recovered one, as he helped lead Minnesota to 11 wins and a No. 10 ranking in the final AP poll. DeLattiboudere played in 51 career games and finished with 83 tackles, which included 13.5 for loss and five sacks. He was named Academic All-Big Ten in 2019 and received the team's Tony Dungy Character and Community Service Award, which is presented to an individual who displays great character on and off the field. DeLattiboudere often gave back to the community through school and hospital visits and organized a school supplies drive during the 2019 training camp.

Werking had a breakout cross country season in 2019. She ran seven races, including recording career-best times at both six kilometers and five kilometers. The Elm Grove, Wis., native rose to the occasion at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships, finishing fourth on the team and 44th overall in her B1G debut in a career-best time of 21:15.4. Her performance was crucial to Minnesota's top-seven team finish in the 14-team race. Werking went on to finish third on the team at both the NCAA Midwest Regional and NCAA Championships, picking up All-Midwest Region honors along the way. She ended the season ranked 40th on Minnesota's all-time six-kilometer performers list. On the track this winter, Werking ran four races during the 2020 indoor season, including career-best times in the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters. An Electrical Engineering major, Werking is a three-year Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

The Big Ten announced the 28 honorees named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2019-20 academic year. These standouts were chosen from a group of 350 students honored throughout the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship.

One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
