The University of Minnesota men's basketball team joins family and friends in mourning the passing of Gophers basketball legend Richard "Dick" Garmaker. The Hibbing native and 1954-55 All-American was 87.
During his two seasons with the Gophers, Garmaker scored more than 1,000 points, averaging nearly 23 points per game, while also recording 7.7 rebounds per game. He earned All-Big Ten First Team honors in each of his two seasons in 1954 and 1955, the latter being selected to six different All-America squads.
Garmaker was the sixth overall pick by the Minneapolis Lakers after graduation, spending five seasons with that franchise before finishing his pro career with the New York Knicks in 1961. A four-time NBA All-Star, he averaged 13.3 points per game during his NBA career.
He is a member of the "M" Club Hall of Fame after being inducted in 1997, and in 2011, saw his jersey number raised to the rafters of Williams Arena.
