Gophers Announce 2020 Summer League Assignments

6/18/2020 9:17:00 AM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS – With the calendar shifting from the spring semester to the summer off-season, members of the Gopher Baseball program are preparing to depart for various summer leagues across the nation.

Over the course of the next few months, 27 Gophers will be sharpening their tools via some level of summer baseball action. Not included in this total are right-handed pitchers J.P. Massey and Drake Davis, who were previously expected to participate in the Cape Cod League prior to its cancellation. The same can be said for catcher Chase Stanke, who has since signed on to play in the Northwoods League.

As for the remainder of the roster, Gophers will be found playing in several different summer leagues, including the Expedition League, Northwoods League and Sunbelt Summer Baseball League. A handful of players will also be competing for amateur town teams.

Over half of the team's summer baseball participants will be playing in the local Northwoods League, as 14 different Gophers have been dispersed across seven of the league's 23 teams: Will Anderson, Noah DeLuga, Ryan Duffy, Michael Gurka, Sam Ireland, Steve Jamroziak, Cody Kelly, Jack Kelly, George Klassen, Jack Liffrig, Zack Raabe, Trent Schoeberl, Drew Stahl and Stanke.

The Northwoods League expects competition to begin on July 1 for teams located within the Minnesota and Wisconsin-Illinois pods.

Another two players are expected to lace up in the Expedition League in infielder Noah Berghammer and right-handed pitcher Gus Radel, who are primed to remain teammates as members of the Pierre Trappers. Kyle Bork will again compete for the Alpharetta Aviators of the Sunbelt Summer Baseball League after a successful campaign in the Georgia-based league last summer.

The Expedition League expects to begin its summer season on June 26th, while the SSBL plans to launch competition on June 29.
