MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota soccer head coach Stefanie Golan announced Wednesday that the team has selected a trio of captains for the upcoming 2020 season. Seniors Athena Kuehn, Makenzie Langdok and Celina Nummerdor will serve as captains of the Gophers.
In addition to these three captains, the program also plans to utilize a six-player Leadership Group consisting of Kuehn, Langdok, Nummerdor, junior Alana Dressely, junior Delaney Stekr and sophomore Katie Duong. This Leadership Group was put together through collective input from the players and will serve as an extension of the team captains.
"This group has decided that we do want captains and that the three seniors within the group are a great, balanced choice to lead together through the season," said Golan. "We couldn't be more excited about those three and the collective six of the Leadership Group, as well as our entire 25 moving forward."
As a 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, Kuehn brings a wealth of experience to the leadership core after appearing in all 42 games over the previous two seasons and starting all but one. While pacing the team in points during the 2019 season, Kuehn also scored two game-winning goals to increase her career totals to three goals, three assists and nine points. All told, the rising senior defender has totaled over 4,600 minutes across 61 career games in Maroon & Gold.
Langdok is coming off a 2019 campaign in which she tied for the team lead in goals and tied for second on the team in points. Throughout her first three seasons, she has appeared in 51 games as a forward for the Gophers, including 19 starts. Entering her senior year, Langdok owns five career goals, two assists and 12 points.
Rounding out the 2020 captains, Nummerdor started all 19 games for the Gophers last season and tallied over 1,400 minutes. As a result, she increased her career totals to 55 games including 32 starts. The senior forward/midfielder scored three goals and three assists through her first three seasons, translating to nine career points.
Minnesota's newly appointed captains have performed well both on and off the field, as all three earned 2019 Academic All-Big Ten honors for their work in the classroom. With captains for the upcoming 2020 campaign now announced, the Gophers have a strong foundation in place for a talented roster that welcomes six newcomers to the fold this fall.
