Summer League Update: Gopher Hitters
7/15/2020 10:14:00 AM | Baseball
For two full weeks now, members of the Gopher Baseball program have been competing in various summer baseball leagues across the nation. While many are playing for their respective town teams due to the uniqueness of this summer, there are also a handful of Gophers participating in developmental collegiate leagues, such as the Northwoods League, Sunbelt Collegiate League and Expedition League.
Altogether, 27 Gophers are expected to partake in some level of summer play. This week, we take a look at how a handful of hitters are faring so far this summer, with an update on Minnesota pitchers scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks.
Noah Berghammer | Pierre Trappers | Expedition League
Through 13 games with the Trappers, Berghammer's 48 at bats are the most of any Gopher currently playing summer ball. Although that has translated to just five hits at present, three of those hits have gone for extra bases and Berghammer has also contributed seven runs, two RBI, five walks and a stolen base.
Zack Elliott | Chaska/St. Cloud Rox | Town Team/Northwoods League
Having recently wrapped up competition with the Chaska Town Team, Elliott is expected to join the Green Bay Booyah of the Northwoods League in the coming days. During his time with Chaska, Elliott posted a spectacular .471 batting average (eight-for-17) with one home run and four doubles. In the field, the rising redshirt sophomore infielder posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, successfully converting all 19 of his defensive chances.
Drew Hmielewski | Marshall A's | Town Team
Hmielewski has appeared in just one game with the A's so far this summer, going one-for-two in his lone appearance with one double, one RBI and one walk.
Sam Ireland | St. Cloud Rox | Northwoods League
With five games and 19 at bats under his belt, Ireland currently owns a .211 average (four-for-19) at the plate. The 2020 breakout freshman Gopher also has collected one double, two runs, three RBI, one walk and one stolen base while playing errorless defense in the field for the Rox.
Cody Kelly | St. Cloud Rox | Northwoods League
Incoming catcher Cody Kelly is among those making noise in the Northwoods League so far this summer. Despite appearing in just three games, Kelly is batting .300 (three-for-10) with one home run, three runs, two RBI and one walk.
Jack Kelly | St. Cloud Rox | Northwoods League
The elder Kelly brother has also been holding his own in St. Cloud, logging 33 at bats over the course of eight games played. Thus far, Kelly is batting .273 with one double, two runs, six RBI and one walk while striking out just three times.
Zack Raabe | Green Bay Booyah | Northwoods League
The NCAA's 2020 Division I hits leader got off to a bit of a slow start this summer, but even so he has collected seven hits across nine starts (10 total games played). Additionally, Raabe registered three runs, three RBI, two walks and three stolen bases over the course of 38 at bats with the Booyah.
Drew Stahl | Fond du Lac Dock Spiders | Northwoods League
Stahl has played in seven games for the Dock Spiders so far this summer and logged 17 at bats. The rising sophomore infielder presently sports a .278 average (five-for-18) with two doubles, three runs scored, three RBI, four walks and three stolen bases. Known to be sure-handed with the glove, Stahl has yet to commit an error in the infield and thus has a 1.000 fielding percentage.
Chase Stanke | Willmar Stingers | Northwoods League
While splitting catching duties for the Stingers, Stanke has appeared in seven games this summer and is hitting .286 over 28 trips to the dish. To this point, the Gopher catcher has posted three runs, five RBI and two walks while committing just one error behind the plate.
Ronald Sweeny | Miesville Mudhens | Town Team
So far this summer, Sweeny is hitting quite well in the town ball environment to the tune of a .400 batting average (10-for-25). Sweeny has even shown a great deal of pop at the plate, as seven of his 10 hits have gone for extra bases: two home runs and five doubles. Additionally, the rising senior first baseman boasts seven runs, 10 RBI and four walks while continuing to produce the prisitine defense that is a signature aspect of his game.

It was a hit parade for the #Gophers in Willmar tonight. @ChaseStanke, Jack Kelly, and @irelandsam44 combine to go 5 for 12 (0.417) on the night.
