Longbella Wins Wisconsin State Amateur

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Thomas Longbella pulled away from the pack Thursday to claim the 119th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship at the Milwaukee Country Club in River Hills, Wis.
A native of Chippewa Falls, Wis., Longbella began the day with a six-shot lead but finished 10 shots clear of the field thanks to a 1-under 69, one of just three golfers under par on the day. His 10-shot win was one shot off the tournament record for margin of victory. The only golfer in the field to be under par in every round, Longbella's 72-hole total of 274 was six strokes under par.
Longbella was tied for second after an opening round 69, but he grabbed first place with a 67 in round two, tying for the lowest score in the tournament. He was one of only two golfers to be below par in round three, using another 69 to extend his lead.
With his win, Longbella becomes the second Gopher in history to win the Wisconsin State Amateur, joining Alex Gaugert, who won in 2014.
Longbella announced in April that he would be coming back for an additional year of eligibility.
