Meet the Freshmen: Tim Stapleton
9/29/2020 10:07:00 AM | Wrestling
As we continue to highlight the incoming Gopher grapplers, we introduce you to Tim Stapleton. Stapleton, a Waconia, Minnesota native, reached the top of the podium at the MSHSL State Tournament, winning his state championship at 152 pounds in Class AA as a junior. Stapleton also was a 2018 state runner-up, and compiled a 159-29 record in his high school career.
Â
Now, read about the incoming freshman's aspirations as a Golden Gopher, as well as one interesting song choice that he must listen to before all of his matches.
Â
GopherSports: What made you choose the University of Minnesota?
Stapleton: Growing up wrestling in Minnesota, I have always dreamed of being a Gopher myself one day, so it has always been on my mind. What made the choice even easier, though, is the fact that the University of Minnesota simply has it all. Not only do you get to be a part of a top-tier wrestling program with a family-like atmosphere, but you also get a highly respected education while representing the great state of Minnesota.
Â
GS: What makes you the most excited about being a Golden Gopher wrestler?
Stapleton: I am most excited about being able to surround myself with guys that have already accomplished the goals that I have set for myself in wrestling. We have some of the best coaches and wrestlers in the world here at Minnesota, especially with our RTC program. Just being able to learn from them is definitely something special so I am probably looking forward to that the most.
Â
GS: How would you describe your wrestling style to the fans?
Stapleton: I would describe my wrestling style as unorthodox and persistent. I find myself to be comfortable in a lot of positions many people might not be, but I am always focused on continuing to move forward and I never stop wrestling through positions.
Â
GS: Do you have any hobbies or special interests?
Stapleton: I love everything about the outdoors. Hiking, boating, and exploring new places. I am also super competitive, so any kind of sports or activities that can be made into a competition I have fun with.
Â
GS: What other sports did you participate in during high school?
Stapleton: I played lacrosse, club soccer, and football.
Â
GS: What is your planned major?
Stapleton: I am currently undecided on a major.
