Minnesota Travels to Michigan for Top-Five Matchup

The No. 4 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team heads to their first road meet of the season, traveling to No. 3 Michigan to face the Wolverines on Friday. The meet will begin at 4:30 p.m. CT (5:30 p.m. ET) and will be broadcast live on ESPNU. 

Last Time Out
Minnesota defeated Iowa in their season opener at Maturi Pavilion by a score of 197.025 - 196.450. The Gophers set a record for the highest season-opening score in program history. Minnesota outscored Iowa on every event except floor. The Maroon and Gold swept the podium on bars, beam and vault while finishing in a tie for the floor title. 

Ona Loper won the all-around title and tied a career-high with a 39.625. Loper also set a career best on bars (9.925) and floor (9.950). 

Four freshmen made their first ever appearance in the Maroon and Gold leo and made a big impact. Mya Hooten performed on both bars (9.750) and floor (9.950). Gianna Gerdes made her debut on vault (9.750), while Emily Koch put up a score of 9.625 on vault and 9.825 on floor. Erin Fortman was the final newcomer to debut, with an elegant floor routine that earned her a 9.850.

Gophers in the Polls
Minnesota checks in at No. 4 overall, the highest national ranking in program history. The Gophers are in the top-10 in all four events: vault (8th), bars (4th), beam (4th) and floor (3rd). 

Loper is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation in the all-around and vault. She also is tied for second on bars and tied for third on floor. Lexy Ramler is the nation's top gymnast on beam, tied for No. 2 on bars, No. 23 on vault and No. 5 in the all-around. Junior Maddie Quarlles comes in at third on vault and freshman Mya Hooten is tied for third on floor. 

B1G Weekly Honors
Loper was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week for the first time this season and third time in her career. The senior tied her career-high in the all-around with a 39.625 to take the event title. Loper put up the top performances on vault, bars and floor to win first on each event. Loper set a new career-high on both bars (9.925) and floor (9.950). Continuing her success from last season on vault, Loper posted a 9.950 on the event. She also put up a 9.800 on beam. 

Scouting Michigan
The Wolverines are ranked No. 3 overall and are in the top-10 in all events. Michigan is first on bars and floor, second on vault, and ninth on beam. Sophomore Sierra Brooks comes in tied for second on bars, tied for third on vault, tenth on floor and sixth in the all-around. Natalie Wojcik is also ranked in all four events, coming in at third all-around, tied for second on bars, tied for sixth on beam, and tied for 10th on floor.  Rounding out the ranked Wolverines are Gabby Willson on floor (No. 3) and Maddie Mariani on beam (No. 6).

Michigan captured all four event titles to defeat Ohio State, 197.225 - 196.000, in its season-opening meet Saturday (Jan. 16) at Crisler Center. The Wolverines score of 197.225 is the highest season-opening score in the history of the program and the second-highest score in a season-opener in Big Ten history. Michigan's 197.225 is second only to Nebraska's 197.375 to open the 2012 season.
