Gophers Drop First Big Ten Match in Madison

Minnesota is back in action tomorrow night at Northwestern
MADISON, Wisconsin -- The No. 7 University of Minnesota volleyball team fell in three sets to the No. 5 Wisconsin Badgers, 17-25, 22-25, 17-25 on Friday evening.
The Golden Gophers (7-4, 2-1 Big Ten) were led by redshirt senior opposite Stephanie Samedy who had 16 kills and 10 digs. Jenna Wenaas and Taylor Landfair had eight kills apiece while Melani Shaffmaster had 28 assists and five digs.
As a team, Minnesota hit .198 with 38 kills, three aces, 42 digs and three blocks. Wisconsin (10-1, 2-1 Big Ten) hit .372 with 52 kills, five aces, 59 digs and four blocks. Julia Orzol led UW with 17 kills while Dana Rettke had 13 on .611 hitting.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Wisconsin came out of the gates firing, scoring eight of the first 10 points to take an early lead. Minnesota would fight back, however, scoring five of the next eight to get back within four at 11-7. Two kills from Landfair and one each from Husemann and Samedy helped the 'U' close the deficit. A 4-2 run from the Badgers brought their lead to 15-9 at the media timeout. Coach McCutcheon called his first timeout after two more points from UW stretched their lead to 17-9. The home team went up by as many as 11 at 22-11 before a 4-0 Gophers run cut the lead to 22-15 and forced UW to call a timeout. The Badgers went on to take a 25-17 win in set one. Landfair and Samedy led the Gophers with five kills apiece as Minnesota hit .235 but had five receiving errors.
Set 2: The first half of set two was back-and-forth as the two teams split the first 24 points, 12-12. No team had more than a two point lead until the Badgers went on a 3-0 run to go up 15-12. The Gophers climbed back within one at 16-15 before a 6-0 UW run effectively broke the set open as they went on to take a 24-17 lead. The Gophers weren't done, however, as they responded with a 5-0 run to get back within 24-22. Two aces from Katie Myers helped cut the deficit before a kill from UW's Dana Rettke won the set, 25-22. Jenna Wenaas had five kills in the set while Samedy had six to hit double digits on the night. Shea Rubright entered for the first time and had two kills of her own while Melani Shaffmaster had 10 assists. The 'U' hit .240 on the set but its opposition hit .463.
Set 3: After an even start to the set with no team leading by more than two, a 5-0 run from Wisconsin took their 10-8 lead up to 15-8. Minnesota would fight back, tallying four of the next five to cut the deficit to four at 16-12. A 3-1 run after from the home team led to coach McCutcheon calling his first timeout of the third set. The Badgers closed the set on a 6-4 run to take the third and final set, 25-17. Samedy led Minnesota with five kills in the final set.
Notable:
-Minnesota is now 52-34 against Wisconsin all-time, including 11-7 under Hugh McCutcheon.
-Prior to tonight, the Gophers had won four of their last five matches at the UW Field House. They're 5-4 under coach McCutcheon on the road at Wisconsin.
-Stephanie Samedy led Minnesota in kills for the ninth time in 11 matches this season with 16.
-Melani Shaffmaster registered 28 assists in addition to three kills, five digs and a block.
