Minneapolis — The No. 4 ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 3 ranked Ohio State on Friday night at Ridder Arena.
Minnesota (0-1-0) got on the board first, but Ohio State (3-0-0) scored three unanswered to take the lead. The Gophers were held scoreless until the 2:03 mark of the third period when Taylor Heise scored to bring the score within one, but Ohio State answered with an empty net goal to bring the final to 4-2.
Peyton Hemp scored her first career goal, and the first goal of the 25th season of Gopher women's hockey, just over five minutes into the first period. Clair DeGeorge tallied two of the next three Buckeye goals to put the Buckeyes ahead by two. Emily Brown (2a) and Taylor Heise (1g-1a) both finished with multi-point games, while Abigail Boreen picked up her first point of the season. Lauren Bench made 22 saves for the Gophers, while Ohio State's Andrea Braendli stopped 34 Gopher shots. Minnesota had a 36-25 advantage in shots for the game.
Quotable
"Tough result here tonight", said head coach Brad Frost. "I thought the first period, in particular, we came out and played extremely well. We came out flying, but unfortunately taking four penalties in the first period gassed some of our players. We had our opportunities and our chances, but a good learning experience in game one and looking forward to improving tomorrow."
