National Coming Out Day

Gophers Celebrate National Coming Out Day

10/11/2021 2:30:00 PM | SAAC, Student-Athlete Development, Diversity & Inclusion

We all belong. We live by these words everyday, and today we're honored to celebrate National Coming Out Day. It remains a movement rich with diversity, recognition of the LGBTQA+ community, and for many, a huge step in living unapologetically and authentically.  The first observance was in 1988 and by 1990, it was being celebrated in all 50 states.

Golden Gopher Athletics proudly lives our shared commitment to a respectful and inclusive environment for all identities and communities. On this National Coming Out Day, we asked Gophers what this day means to them and why it is important to them to celebrate.

Meade Avery:
"It takes a lot of courage, time, and effort to feel comfortable being yourself. This National Coming Out Day, I'm thankful for the community that I have found within Gopher Athletics. Being open about being out is the first step in supporting others through their process, so I'd like to recognize that this day is also for those who are not out. You're loved and supported no matter where you are on your journey. We're in this together."

Mel Bartlett:

"To me, National Coming Out Day is about celebrating the growth that I have made to recognize and be open about being a non-binary queer individual. I struggled with accepting myself when I lived in Texas and it has been a long road to figure out who I am. Because of this, I graciously accept the community that has welcomed me with open arms since moving to college, especially within athletics. National Coming Out Day allows me to accept my past and move forward to help show support for all LGBTQ youth, no matter their geographic location. National Coming Out Day allows many people of various identities to come together to foster an important community. It serves as a unifying force to demonstrates to LGBTQ youth and adults that they have a community waiting to welcome them, support them, and show them unconditional love."

The Gophers are proud to be part of multiple student led groups that work on improving the experiences of LGBTQA+ students and student-athletes.
