Gophers Overpower Mavericks 6-2 to Earn First Sweep

10/16/2021 6:56:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Minnesota earned its 52nd straight victory over Minnesota State with a strong offensive performance on Saturday afternoon.

Minneapolis, Minn. -- The No. 5/6 Golden Gopher women's hockey team was firing on all cylinders as they posted six goals in a 6-2 victory over Minnesota State in game two of this weekend's home-and-home series in Mankato on Saturday afternoon.

Minnesota (3-3-0) poured on the offense, scoring six goals on 49 shots to defeat Minnesota State (5-3-0) to complete their first sweep of the season. The power play got the Gophers going early as Gracie Ostertag recorded her second goal in as many games to put the 'U' up 1-0. Savannah Norcross added to the lead with her first goal as a Gopher. Freshman Peyton Hemp tallied her second career goal to put Minnesota up 3-0 after the first. Amy Potomak notched two goals to offset Minnesota State's only two goals in the middle frame. Emily Oden converted a nice pass from Catie Skaja to round out the Gopher scoring.

Makayla Pahl started in goal for the second straight game and earned another victory by making nine saves. Freshman Skylar Vetter took over at the start of the third period and stopped all four shots she faced. The Gophers led in shots 49-15. Mavericks goaltender Calla Frank stopped 43 of 49 shots.

"Great weekend with our home-and-home and to get our first sweep of the year," said head coach Brad Frost. "Some really nice play by our team overall and another really good 60 minutes of hockey tonight. Congrats to Savannah Norcross on her first goal as a Gopher. It was a really fun weekend and we're looking forward to getting home and facing another great opponent next week in Colgate."
