MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota (8-4-3, 4-4-0 B1G) competed a perfect 2-0-0 weekend with a 1-0 win on the road against Northwestern on Sunday afternoon. Fifth-year senior Makenzie Langdok scored the game-winning goal in the first half to help Minnesota defeat Northwestern and Illinois for the first time in the same season since 2012.Â
"Proud of this group to post two shutouts this weekend," head coach Erin Chastain said. "Sunday games are a grind and being on the road is a grind. I think the group's mentality was great today. We scored a great goal and then had to withstand some pressure at the end of the second half. So proud and now we have to get prepared for a good Iowa team on Thursday."
Minnesota's goal came in the 21st minute of the contest with Langdok smashing home a follow-up goal in the box. After a great service from McKenna Buisman, Northwestern's goalkeeper attempted to catch the ball but couldn't come down with it with Megan Gray making a run in the box. The ball dribbled out where Langdok was able to connect and increase Minnesota's first half goal total to 20 this season.Â
"Kenz played great today and also played great on Thursday," Chastain said. "That's typically what you expect out of your fifth years and seniors. They feel the end coming and they really rise to the occasion. I wish I got to coach Kenz for longer than just this year. She's just an awesome right back and a leader for our team. I'm so proud that she's able to get the reward of scoring some big-time goals for us."
Defensively it was a three-save shutout for Plaschko, who now has eight this season, and made the Gophers the only team in the Big Ten this weekend to post two shutouts. As a team Minnesota allowed just six total shots while having eight of their own with four of them on goal.Â
Next up for Minnesota is a road test with Iowa (10-5-1, 4-4-0 B1G) on Thursday, Oct. 21, who is coming off a 3-2 win over Illinois on Sunday. The Gophers will also host Nebraska on Sunday, Oct. 24, at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium with both matches being streamed on BTN+.Â
