MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota (8-5-3, 4-5-0 B1G) fell 1-0 in a rainy contest against Iowa (11-5-1, 5-4-0 B1G) on Thursday night on the road. The Gophers surrendered a second half goal and were unable to score in a conference match for the first time this season.
"Really disappointed," head coach Erin Chastain said. "I thought we actually stepped up in the second half and were in their end quite a bit the first 20 minutes and their goal came against the run of play. We made a mistake and they were very opportunistic and capitalized. It's unfortunate that we weren't able to get on the board but we still have a great opportunity with this group on Sunday. It's a chance to honor our seniors and to play against Nebraska for a chance to play in the Big Ten Tournament. I know our group will be highly motivated to have a wonderful performance."
Kenzie Roling was the game-winning goal scorer for the Hawkeyes, scoring the goal in the 73rd minute with an assist to Courtney Powell.
As a team Minnesota enjoyed a shot advantage of 13-11 in the match and also had seven on goal to Iowa's five. Minnesota had its chances on set pieces with four corner kick opportunities, but none resulted in goals for the Maroon and Gold. Junior captain Megan Plaschko made four saves in the defeat.
Minnesota's season will be on the line on Sunday with Nebraska (6-9-2, 2-5-2 B1G) coming to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Oct. 24. Nebraska is coming off back-to-back wins against Wisconsin and Illinois. The match between the Gophers and Cornhuskers can be seen on BTN+ starting at 1 p.m.
