MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota (8-6-3, 4-6-0 B1G) dropped a 2-0 match to Nebraska (7-9-2, 3-5-2 B1G) at home on Sunday afternoon, ending the Gophers 2021 fall season. Nebraska scored twice in the first half and held off the Gophers attack in the second half to secure the Cornhusker's third-straight victory.
"We fought to the end today," head coach Erin Chastain said. "Our seniors mean so much to this team and our program. I can't fault the effort today, and we just talked after the game that this isn't the ending we wanted and all you can do now is remember that and be motivated for next season. That's what this offseason will be about, getting ready for next year and hopefully being in a different scenario in terms of the playoffs."
As a team Minnesota used a strong offensive second half to end the match with a 16-13 shot advantage with five of Minnesota's shots being on target. Minnesota had its chances in the second half, but could not find a goal for the second match in a row. In the defeat junior goalkeeper Megan Plaschko made five saves while the Minnesota defense saved one shot off the line during the match.
Nebraska's Abbey Schwarz scored the game-winning goal in the 27th minute with Jordan Zade assisting on the play. Nebraska's Sarah Weber doubled that lead just moments later with a goal in the 30th minute with an assist going to Schwarz.
With the loss Minnesota's season ends with a ninth-place finish in the Big Ten standings. The top eight teams in the Big Ten qualify for the Big Ten Tournament. In Erin Chastain's first season as head coach the Gophers finished with eight wins, the most since the 2018 season. Next season the Gophers could return up to 20 student-athletes from this year's roster that was among the Big Ten's highest scoring teams in conference play.
