Gophers Hold Off Hoosiers in Sunday Sweep

Stephanie Samedy led the Gophers with 14 kills
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 12 University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated the Indiana Hoosiers in three sets, 25-15, 25-16, 25-21, on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Gophers (11-5, 6-2 Big Ten) were paced by redshirt senior opposite Stephanie Samedy, who registered 14 kills, six digs and one block. Airi Miyabe posted 13 kills while Jenna Wenaas went for nine kills and nine digs.
As a team, Minnesota hit .358 with 46 kills, four aces, 49 digs and three blocks. Indiana (8-12, 2-6 Big Ten) hit .158 with 37 kills, 0 aces, 46 digs and four blocks. Breanna Edwards led the Hoosiers with 13 kills.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota came out red hot offensively, scoring eight of the first 11 points to grab an early lead. Samedy totaled six kills in her first nine swings while Miyabe added two, giving the Gophers a 12-7 lead and leading to the Hoosiers first timeout of the match. After a point from IU, the 'U' reeled off three straight points and seven of the next nine to open up a 19-10 lead and take control of the set. The Hoosiers would cut the lead to six at 20-14 but kills from Myers and Wenaas brought the lead back up to eight and forced the visitors into their second timeout of the set. The Gophers finished the set on a 3-0 run, taking it 25-15. Minnesota hit a scorching .533 in the first set. Samedy led the way with seven kills while Miyabe had four and Wenaas had three. Shaffmaster had 17 assists and a service ace.
Set 2: Indiana started out set two on top, taking a 6-2 lead before a 4-0 run from the home team tied it up at 6-6. A 3-1 IU run gave them a 10-7 as they continued to control the early part of set two. Minnesota finally tied it at 12-12 after a kill from Myers and an attacking error from IU. Another attacking error gave the home team its first lead of the set, leading to a Hoosiers timeout. A kill from Miyabe after the timeout capped off a 4-0 run. After another IU point, the Gophers took another 4-0 run after three attacking errors and a kill from Samedy led to another timeout with Minnesota leading, 18-13. A dual block by Rubright and Samedy and an ace from Shaffmaster capped off a 6-0 run by the 'U.' The Hoosiers would cut the lead to 21-15 but would get no closer as two kills from Wenaas sandwiched one from Myers and the Gophers took set two, 25-16. The 'U' held Indiana to .000 hitting in set two with nine attacking errors. Wenaas led Minnesota with five kills on the set while Miyabe and Samedy had three each.
Set 3: Minnesota went up 2-0 before a 5-1 run by the Hoosiers gave them a 5-3 lead. The Gophers would go on to tie it at seven, eight and nine before a 5-1 IU run gave them a 14-10 lead and led to Minnesota's first timeout of the match. A kill from Miyabe and attacking error from IU cut the lead in half as the 'U' worked to find its rhythm. Two more kills from Samedy and an ace from CC McGraw tied up the set once again at 15-15, leading to a Hoosiers timeout. The Gophers finally took their first lead of the set at 17-16 after kills from Myers and Wenaas. IU re-took the lead at 18-17 before a service error, block from Myers and Shaffmaster and a Samedy kill sparked a 3-0 run and put Minnesota up 20-18. Indiana would tie it up again at 20-20, but the Gophers closed it out on a 5-1 run to win, 25-21.
Notable:
-Minnesota is 59-16 all-time against Indiana, including a 13-1 mark under Hugh McCutcheon. The lone loss came in 2014, a four set loss. The Gophers have won 10 in-a-row in the series, taking nine of the contests in three sets.
-Minnesota has won 10 of its last 12 matches.
-Under coach McCutcheon, Minnesota is 127-14 (.901) at home, including an 82-10 (.891) record during Big Ten home matches.
-Airi Miyabe registered 13 kills, five digs and a block. It's her fourth straight game with double digit kills.
