Kennedy Named to U.S. Women's National Team Olympic Coaching Staff

Courtney Kennedy, a former national champion with the Gophers and 'M' Club Hall of Fame inductee, was named an assistant coach for the U.S. Women's National Team ahead of the 2022 Olympics.

MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota women's hockey alumna and 2008 'M' Club Hall of Fame inductee Courtney Kennedy has been named as an assistant coach of the U.S. Women's National Team, USA Hockey announced on Friday. Kennedy, who played for the Gophers from 1998-01, will be part of a U.S. Olympic senior coaching staff for the first time.

The Woburn, Mass. native tallied 112 points for the 'U' in three seasons of competition and was a member of the 2000 national championship team. After playing one season at Colby College, Kennedy and her sister, Shannon, transferred to Minnesota. Kennedy is no stranger to the Olympic scene as she represented the United States in the 2002 and 2006 Olympic Games and the 2005 IIHF World Women's Championships. Her international achievements include an Olympic silver and bronze medal and a world women's championships gold. 

Kennedy brings a resumé filled with international coaching success to her first Olympic senior team stint. As an assistant, Kennedy helped lead the U.S. to four gold medals at the IIHF U18 Women's World Championships and a silver medal in this year's IIHF Women's World Championship. Kennedy has been a part of the Boston College women's hockey coaching staff for the past 15 seasons.

Kennedy will serve as an assistant coach for the United States as they look to win their second straight gold medal. The 2022 Olympic winter games run Feb 4-20, in Beijing, China. The U.S. recently began its residency program in Blaine, Minn. and is slated to face Canada in an exhibition match in St. Paul, Minn. on Dec. 20.

Hannah Brandt, Dani Cameranesi, Amanda Kessel, Kelly Pannek, Lee Stecklein return to the U.S. residency program after being a part of the gold medal winning team in 2018. 2021 IIHF silver medalists Megan Bozek, Abbey Murphy and Grace Zumwinkle join the group this year.

Joining Kennedy as part of the U.S. coaching staff are head coach Joel Johnson, assistant coach Brian Pothier, and assistant/goaltending coach Steve Thompson.
