10/20/2021 10:01:00 PM | Women's Hockey

The No. 4/5 Gophers take on the No. 3 Raiders in the first non-conference series since the 2019-20 season this Friday and Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 4/5 University of Minnesota women's hockey team is set to take on No. 3 Colgate in its first non-conference action this weekend. Puck drop is set for 1:00 p.m. CT on both Friday and Saturday at Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, NY.

Last Time Out: Gophers Sweep Mavericks
The Gophers (3-3-0) picked up their first series sweep of the season over the Mavericks. No. 5/6 Minnesota defeated Minnesota State 3-0 on Friday Oct. 15 for their first home victory of the season. Minnesota finished the sweep with a 6-2 win in Mankato on Saturday Oct. 16. The Gophers power play was rolling Friday, as the team notched their first three power play goals of the season. Taylor Heise played in her 100th career game on Friday and notched point No. 100 with a goal. Makayla Pahl got her first two starts of the season and made the most of them. Pahl earned her first career shutout on Friday and was named WCHA Goaltender of the Week for the first time after picking up two wins and stopping 23 of 25 shots over the weekend. Savannah Norcross picked up her first goal as a member of the Maroon and Gold on Saturday. Ella Huber (4a), Gracie Ostertag (2g-1a), Madeline Wethington (1g-2a), Taylor Heise (1g-1a), Peyton Hemp (1g-1a), Emily Oden (1g-1a), and Amy Potomak (2g) all recorded multi-point weekends.

Maroon and Gold Firsts
Junior Makayla Pahl recorded her first career shutout against MSU on Friday. The same night, freshman Ella Huber recorded her first career multi-point game with three assists. On Saturday, Savannah Norcross recorded her first goal as a Gopher and Emily Zumwinkle notched her career first point with an assist.

Return of Non-Conference
The Gophers will play their first series against a non-WCHA opponent since Jan. 4-5, 2020 when Yale came to Ridder Arena. The Maroon and Gold are 16-0-1 in their last 17 non-conference games and have not lost to a non-conference opponent since Jan. 12, 2018 against Vermont.

Scouting Colgate
Colgate (8-0-0) has been perfect to start the season with series sweeps over RIT, Mercyhurst, Vermont, Syracuse. The Raiders have been defensively sound this season as they have only allowed nine goals in their first eight games. This will be the first tough test for Colgate as Minnesota becomes the first ranked team they have faced off against this year. The Gophers look to remain perfect against the Raiders in their first non-conference series of the season. Minnesota leads the all-time series 6-0-0 with the last victory coming in 2019 at Ridder

Success Against the ECAC
The Gophers have an excellent track record against Eastern College Athletic Conference foes. Minnesota is 79-19-4 all-time in regular season games against the ECAC.

Scoring Milestones on the Horizon
Senior Taylor Heise is Minnesota's active career scoring leader with 101 career points (41g-60a) in 101 career games. Redshirt senior Amy Potomak (35g-44a) and fifth-year Emily Brown (16g-57a) are approaching 80 career points. Senior Emily Oden (21g-45a) and fifth-year Olivia Knowles (14g-46a) are both nearing 70 career points.

25th Season
The 2021-22 season marks the 25th season of Gopher women's hockey. To celebrate the first quarter-century of Gopher women's hockey, Minnesota will wear special '25 seasons' patches on their jerseys among other celebrations throughout the season.

Quest for Eighth National Title Continues
Minnesota has won seven national championships (2000, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016) and looks for a historic eighth title national crown in 2021-22.
