Gophers’ tournament run ends in ITA Central Regional Quarterfinals

Day 4 Recap

Rachel Hanford opened up play Sunday, taking part in the last 8 of the ITA Central Regional. She squared off against Maria Titova (Kansas) looking to book her ticket to the Semi-finals. A close first set saw Kansas win 6-3, and follow up with a 6-1 win in the second set. The Gophers tournament ends in the quarterfinals, as Kansas moved on to the next round. Rachel Hanford wrapped up the tournament with an overall singles record of 3-1. 

Tournament Recap

The Gophers ITA Central Regional journey comes to an end on Sunday, as Rachel Hanford falls in the quarterfinals to Kansas. Minnesota competed over the course of 4 days, with the doubles pairing of Said/Duong reaching the round of 16, and Hanford reaching the round of 8 in singles play. The Central Regional hosted 28 teams in total, and had prominent features from the B1G 10 and BIG 12. 

Singles Play

The Gophers fared well in singles play, as 7 (3 on bye) individuals reached the main draw round of 128. The 4 competitors who reached this stage all won, securing 7 places in the round of 64. A 2-5 record in this round saw Emilee Duong and Rachel Hanford advance to the final 32. Hanford continued her success, winning 2 more matches before eventually falling to Maria Titova (Kansas) in the quarterfinals. Her 3-1 main draw record was the best of any Gopher competitor. Anfisa Danilchenko and Dalila Said had strong records across all play, each recording a 3-0 start to the tournament. Lucy Lu finished with a winning 2-1 record across her weekend play. 

Doubles Play

Each of the 4 doubles pairings received byes into the round of 64. Here, the Gophers dominated en route to a 4-0 round. Minnesota ran into stiffer competition in the last 32, recording a 1-3 record at this stage. Emilee Duong and Dalila Said advanced to the last 16, before falling to the Oklahoma pairing of Sleeth/Pisareva. Said/Duong's 2-1 doubles record propelled Minnesota to a winning record in this category. 

Next Up

Minnesota will next play November 5-7 in Boston. They will be competing in the Harvard Invitational.
