Samedy eclipsed the 1,800 career kill mark with 18 tonight

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana -- The No. 11 Minnesota Golden Gophers volleyball team took down the Indiana Hoosiers in three sets, 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 on Wednesday night at Wilkinson Hall.

The Golden Gophers (13-6, 8-3 Big Ten) were paced by redshirt senior opposite Stephanie Samedy, who topped 1,800 career kills in the second set on her way to a match-high 18 kills with 15 digs. Shea Rubright tallied four kills with a team-best five blocks while Melani Shaffmaster had 36 assists and 10 digs.

As a team, Minnesota hit .304 with 46 kills, three aces, 62 digs and 10 blocks. Indiana (9-14, 3-8 Big Ten) hit .073 with 28 kills, one ace, 46 digs and five blocks. Breana Edwards and Mady Saris led IU with eight kills.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Melani Shaffmaster sparked a 7-2 Minnesota run in her home state of Indiana with her patented dump attack to get the visitors on the board. The Hoosiers would cut the Gophers lead to 10-7 before a pair of kills from Miyabe and Samedy helped Minnesota get to the media timeout up 15-12. The Gophers extended their lead to as many as seven at 19-12 after an ace from McGraw and kill from Myers, leading to an Indiana timeout. The Hoosiers would get to within four again at 24-20 before Miyabe's fourth kill of the set gave them the set one win, 25-20. Samedy led the way with six kills while Myers also added three as the Gophers hit .314. The Hoosiers hit .216 through the first frame.

Set 2: IU got on the board with the first two points after a Minnesota service error and an ace. The Gophers would respond by scoring 10 of the next 11 points, led by a pair of kills and a solo block by Shea Rubright. An ace by Shaffmaster to put the 'U' up 9-3 led to a timeout from the Hoosiers. IU would cut the lead to 12-6 before a 3-1 Gophers run gave them their largest lead of the set thus far at 15-7. Kills from Myers, Shaffmaster and Samedy helped balloon the lead. A 7-4 from IU cut Minnesota's lead to 19-14 before the 11th kill of the match from Samedy forced a Hoosiers timeout with the Gophers leading 20-14. The timeout did little to slow the Minnesota momentum as the visitors finished the set with the final six points to win, 25-14.

Set 3: Set three was hotly contested through the outset. Through the first 26 points, the two teams were tied at 13 with neither leading by more than two points. The Gophers strung two quick points together with kills from Miyabe and Samedy to go up 15-13 into the media timeout. Miyabe, Samedy and Wenaas combined for 12 kills in Minnesota's first 15 points of the set. The 'U' continued on a 7-2 run with an ace from Samedy and a dual block from Myers and Wenaas to go up 20-15 and force the Hoosiers final timeout of the match. The Gophers finished strong, taking five of the final six points after the timeout to win, 25-16.

Notable:
-Minnesota is 60-16 all-time against Indiana, including a 14-1 mark under Hugh McCutcheon. The lone loss came in 2014, a four set loss. The Gophers have won 11 in-a-row in the series, taking nine of the contests in three sets.
-Airi Miyabe registered 11 kills for her seventh straight match with double digit kills.
-Stephanie Samedy registered 18 kills and 15 digs. It was her 54th career double double.
-Samedy (1,808 kills) became the sixth Gophers player in program history to eclipse 1,800 career kills.
-Melani Shaffmaster registered 36 assists, 10 digs and an ace.
-CC McGraw tallied a team-best 15 digs.
-Shea Rubright led the Gophers with five blocks.
