No. 3 Minnesota Set to Face Bemidji State

The No. 3 Gophers take on the Beavers in their final road series until December this Friday and Saturday in Bemidji.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3 University of Minnesota women's hockey team is set to take on in-state rival Bemidji State. Puck drop is set for 3:00 p.m. CT on Friday and 2:00 p.m. CT on Saturday at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn. The Golden Gopher women's hockey program currently sits at 698 wins. No Division I program has ever reached 700.
Last Time Out: Gophers Sweep Raiders
The Gophers (5-3-0) picked up their second straight series sweep and first two non-conference wins of the season. No. 4/5 Minnesota defeated No. 3 Colgate 5-3 on Friday Oct. 22 for their first non-conference victory since the 2019-20 season. Minnesota finished the sweep with a 3-2 win on Saturday Oct. 23. Special teams play proved to be crucial in the series as a combined 16 penalties, 11 against the Gophers, were called in the two games. The Gophers penalty kill shut down nine of 11 Raiders power plays and scored the first shorthanded goal of the season thanks to Taylor Heise. The Gophers' seniors scored all eight goals over the weekend. Abigail Boreen tallied a career high four points (1g-3a) in the series and was named WCHA Forward of the Week for the first time. Emily Oden played in her 100th career game on Friday while Crystalyn Hengler played in her 100th career game on Saturday. Makayla Pahl and Lauren Bench recorded wins over the weekend. Taylor Heise (2g-1a), Amy Potomak (2g), and Catie Skaja (1g-1a) all joined Boreen with multi-point weekends.
Scouting Bemidji State
Bemidji State (2-3-1) is coming off of a win and tie against Clarkson at home. The Beavers have started 1-3 in conference play with their only win coming against newcomers St. Thomas. Bemidji State has been able to grind out low-scoring wins this season as they have only scored eight goals in their first six games. The Beavers are led in scoring by sophomore Taylor Nelson (1g-3a), fifth-year Paige Beebe (2g-1a), and senior Graysen Meyers (2g-1a). Sophomore goaltender Hannah Hogenson stopped 28 of 29 shots to earn her first collegiate victory on Saturday against Clarkson.

Minnesota has been dominant against Bemidji State recently with 10 straight wins over their WCHA rival. The Gophers have outscored the Beavers 53-17 in those games. The last series between these two opponents in Bemidji saw the Gophers win 6-1 and 9-1 last season. Saturday will mark the 100th game all-time between Minnesota and Bemidji State. The Gophers lead the all-time series 82-9-7.

Abigail Boreen recorded a career high four points over the weekend and earned the first WCHA Forward of the Week award since Grace Zumwinkle took home the honors in February. This weekend's series against Bemidji State will be the final true road series until Dec. 3-4. The Gophers have played five out of eight games on the road this season and have gone 4-1 in those games. After this weekend's series, the Gophers will have an off-week and return to Ridder Arena the following week to face RIT.
Scoring Milestones on the Horizon
Senior Taylor Heise is Minnesota's active career scoring leader with 104 career points (43g-61a) in 103 career games. Redshirt senior Amy Potomak (37g-44a) recorded her 80th point over the weekend. Fifth-year Emily Brown (17g-57a) is approaching 80 career points. Senior Emily Oden (22g-45a) and fifth-year Olivia Knowles (14g-47a) are both nearing 70 career points.
25th Season
The 2021-22 season marks the 25th season of Gopher women's hockey. To celebrate the first quarter-century of Gopher women's hockey, Minnesota will wear special '25 seasons' patches on their jerseys among other celebrations throughout the season.
Quest for Eighth National Title Continues
Minnesota has won seven national championships (2000, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016) and looks for a historic eighth title national crown in 2021-22.
