MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 6 University of Minnesota women's cross country program took home a pair of titles from the 2021 Big Ten Conference Championships Friday, with Megan Hasz earning the women's six-kilometer individual title in a time of 20:34.5 to help boost the Gophers to their third team title in program history.
Like her sister, Bethany Hasz, a year before, Hasz secured the individual crown in comeback fashion, passing the eventual runner-up Erika VanderLende with just under 100-meters to go and surging through the finish line with just under a second difference between the two.
Two other Gopher women cracked the top-10 alongside Hasz, with Abby Kohut-Jackson taking seventh (20:48.3) and Bethany Hasz finishing ninth (20:54.4). Anastasia Korzenowski came in fourth for Minnesota, just missing the top-20 with a 21st place finish (21:42.2).
One of the most important finishes of the day belonged to Minnesota's fifth scorer, Tate Sweeney, whose 35th place finish clinched the team title for the Gophers with 72 points, only six points ahead of runner-up Wisconsin (78). Jaycie Thomsen and Carissa Dock wrapped up the scoring spots in 43rd and 60th, respectively.
With the win, Hasz became only the third individual champion in Minnesota program history, joining 2020 champion Bethany Hasz and 1987 champion Eileen Donaghy.
The team's title is the third in history for the Gophers program, with their first two coming in 2007-08. The win is the first for Gophers' head coach Sarah Hopkins, who now has two individual champions and one team title in her tenure.
MEN'S 5.2 MILE RACE
The No. 29 men took home third in the 5.2 mile team standings, finishing with 83 points for their best team finish since finishing in the same spot in 2015. No. 15 Michigan took second, while No. 10 Wisconsin earned the team title with 27 points.
Alec Basten led the way for Minnesota in fifth, finishing in a personal best time of 24:49.2. Matt Wilkinson (15th) and Owen Hoeft (20th) added a pair of top-20 finishes, with Khalid Hussein and Jack Manderscheid close behind in 21st and 22nd, respectively. Ethan Cannon registered a 41st place finish, rounding out the scoring for Minnesota along with 66th place finisher Eli Hoeft.
Wisconsin's Bob Liking took the men's individual title in a time of 24:38.7, helping Wisconsin to their fourth straight team title with 27 points.
