STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota opens the 2021-22 season against Concordia-St. Paul, Monday night at Williams Arena. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. It marks the first time since the 2017-18 season the Golden Gophers and Golden Bears open the season against each other, also an exhibition game.
• The game marks the beginning of a new era in Golden Gopher basketball as head coach Ben Johnson begins his coaching career. Johnson became the 18th head coach in program history on March 22, 2021 after three years as an assistant at Xavier. Prior to his time at Xavier, Johnson was an assistant coach for the Gophers from 2013-18. Johnson graduated from Minnesota after a two-year stint with the basketball team. He began his collegiate playing career at Northwestern and played two seasons before returning to the Twin Cities to finish his career. He finished with 533 points in 59 games in Maroon and Gold and scored a total of 1,202 career points between the two Big Ten Conference institutions.
• Minnesota has eight seniors on this year's roster, including redshirt senior Eric Curry. Minnesota also welcomes back Payton Willis, who was with the Gophers in the 2019-20 season and transferred to College of Charleston in 2020-21. He returns to Minnesota and will likely be the starting point guard for the Gophers. Additional seniors include: Charlie Daniels, Joey Kern, Luke Loewe, Danny Ogele, Sean Sutherlin and Eylijah Stephens. The Gophers also added sophomores Jamison Battle and Will Ramberg as well as freshmen Abdoulaye Thiam, Treyton Thompson and Jackson Purcell. Returning junior Isaiah Ihnen and junior transfer Parker Fox are also on the roster, however suffered season-ending injuries in the offseason.
• The Gophers open the 2021-22 season Nov. 9 when Kansas City comes to town. Game time is set for 7 p.m., and will be streamed on BTN +. In all, the Golden Gophers will play 10 nonconference games this season, including the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Pittsburgh, and the Asheville Championships, Nov. 12 & 14.
• Minnesota begins Big Ten play Dec. 8, when Michigan State visits Williams Arena. Game time for the Big Ten opener is 8 p.m., and televised on BTN.
