A GOLDEN Experience at the 2021 Leadership Retreat

Golden Gopher student-athletes kicked off the 2021-22 academic year by participating in the annual Leadership Retreat at Huntington Bank Stadium. With the pandemic eliminating the retreat opportunity the previous year, the student-athletes were eager for the chance to connect with one another and dive into programming facilitated by the Leadership U staff.

On Friday, August 20th, student-athletes from across sport programs gathered for a half day retreat where programming inspired many smiles, memories, and life-long lessons.

Throughout the half day Leadership Retreat, student-athletes focused on determining qualities of a role model leader, understanding their own behavioral styles as well as their peers, and troubleshooting case study scenarios in a cross-sport environment. Student-athletes engaged in deliberate practice of strengthening their emotional intelligence which builds on their previous programming. Through the Leadership U program, we believe that emotional intelligence is a core skill for leaders to possess.

Members of the retreat explored what types of behavioral styles there are in leadership in order to best understand how to make a connection with others. Key components of a relationship is understanding how to communicate, how to relate, and how others may respond to given situations. Gopher student-athletes underwent specific programming directed at knowing their own styles of leadership and that of their peers.

As a program, we aim to provide student-athletes the opportunity to strengthen their emotional intelligence and leadership skills in any type of situation. We believe that providing the time and space for student-athletes to connect is one of the most beneficial ways to encourage them to grow in their next stage of life, feel prepared for what comes next, and help them inspire their teams.

The 2021 Leadership Retreat was a huge success due to the level of investment and excitement student-athletes provided. Go Gophers!
