Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers took an early 3-2 lead off of two kills from Samedy and one from Landfair before a 5-1 Wolverines run gave them a 7-4 lead. The Gophers would cut UM's lead to one at 9-8 after a dual block by Husemann and Wenaas. Michigan would score six of the next seven points, however, to go up 15-9 heading into the first media timeout of the match. A 3-1 run by the home team gave them their largest lead of the set before a Samedy kill and Shaffmaster block cut the lead to 18-12. UM would extend its lead to 22-13, leading to a timeout from coach McCutcheon. The Wolverines went on to win set one, 25-13. Minnesota hit .108 while the home team hit .308. Samedy led the Gophers with three kills while Landfair and Shaffmaster had two each.
Set 2: Minnesota got off to a fast start in set two, bursting out to a 6-1 lead. Three kills from Samedy and two from Wenaas got the visitors going in the early going of the set, leading to a Michigan timeout. The Gophers went up 7-1 after another Wenaas kill before a 5-2 Wolverines run cut the lead to 9-6. The 'U' promptly answered with a 5-1 run of its own to take a commanding 14-7 lead and force the hosts into calling their second timeout of the set. Minnesota kept its run going after the timeout, scoring the next three off of a kill from Husemann and two more by Wenaas. Michigan would trim the lead to nine at 22-13, but would get no closer, as the Gophers finished on a 3-0 run to win set two, 25-13. Wenaas led the team with seven kills on the set. The Gophers hit .359 and held the Wolverines to just -.048.
Set 3: The two teams went back and forth for the first 16 points with neither team leading by more than a point at any time. A 4-1 run by Michigan, however, put them up 12-9 and forced coach McCutcheon into taking his first timeout of the set. A dump kill by Shaffmaster right after the timeout got the Gophers back to within 12-10 before a 3-0 Wolverines run gave them their largest lead of the set at 15-10. Minnesota would rally once again, scoring seven of the next nine points to tie the set up once again at 17-17. UM would score three of the next four to take a 20-18 lead before a 3-1 Gophers run led by a kill from Miyabe tied it up at 21. The first career ace from freshman Natalie Glenn and another kill from Miyabe gave the 'U' a 23-21 lead and forced Michigan into calling a timeout. Michigan would tie it up at 23 and 24, but kills from Miyabe and Wenaas put the Gophers over the top for a 26-24 set three win. Miyabe led the 'U' with six kills on the set while Samedy had five and Wenaas had three. The Gophers hit .240 and held UM to .128.
Set 4: The two teams were even after 10 points at 5-5 before the Wolverines went on a 9-1 run to take a 14-6 lead. Coach McCutcheon burned two timeouts by the halfway point of the set as he worked to settle his team down after an emotional third set. Minnesota would fight back to within seven at 17-10, but would get no closer. The Wolverines upped their lead to as many as 12 at 23-11. Kills from Miyabe and Wenaas and a dump from Shaffmaster got the visitors back to within 10 at 24-14 before UM took the fourth set, 25-14.Â
Set 5: The Gophers went up 1-0 in set five on a block from Husemann before the Wolverines responded with three of the next four to go up 3-2. The Gophers would tie and eventually take the lead at 5-4 after Samedy's 19th kill of the match. UM came back to notch four of the next five points to take an 8-6 lead heading into the media timeout. The Gophers would respond before taking an 11-10 lead after three consecutive kills from Wenaas. The Wolverines would go on a 3-1 run to go up 13-11 and force coach McCutcheon into calling a timeout.
