Gophers Sign Aiva Schmitz to 2022 Class

Schmitz will join Minnesota as the 7th ranked German player for her age
Minneapolis - The Gophers add the signature of a new recruit for the 2022 class, Aiva Schmitz. Schmitz is currently ranked #7 for her age in Germany, and #105 in the Women's German National Ranking. She has had consistent success on the court, winning the Indoor/Outdoor State Championships for the Under 14, Under 16, and Under 18 age divisions. Most recently, she won the 2021 Women's Outdoor Championships and led her high school tennis team to their first championship in school history. Her season culminated with being named Athlete of the Year at her high school.
Coach Catrina Thompson on Schmitz's signing, "We are thrilled to have Aiva joining our program next season! We are looking forward to seeing all that Aiva can contribute to the team and accomplish during her time as a Gopher".
Schmitz's accomplishments extend beyond the court. Academically, she has been named a National Merit Commended Scholar, recently receiving an AP Scholar Award, and being named Student Athlete of the Year at her high school. Schmitz has held the highest academic ranking of her graduating class at her high school each year. She will join the Gophers next season as a part of an exciting team with great potential now and moving forward.
