MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota Gophers men's cross country program has been selected to compete at the 2021 NCAA Championships next Saturday, Nov. 13 in Tallahassee, Fla., as was announced by the NCAA Saturday afternoon. Minnesota was selected as one of the 13 "at-large" teams to compete amongst the 31 team field.
The Gophers earned the at-large bid after an impressive performance at the 2021 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships on Friday, where they claimed a decisive fourth place finish (120 points) along with a pair of All-Region performances from Alec Basten (seventh) and Matt Wilkinson (25th). All of the five scoring Gophers finished within the top-32 spots, with Jack Manderscheid taking 26th, Owen Hoeft taking 30th and Khalid Hussein rounding out the scoring in 32nd.
On the other side of the program, the women will also travel to Tallahassee next weekend after earning an automatic qualifying bid to the championships at yesterday's regional meet with a first place team finish in the women's 6K race. All five scoring women earned All-Region honors at the meet, led by a 4-5-6 finish from Bethany Hasz, Abby Kohut-Jackson and Megan Hasz.
The last time Minnesota's men's program earned a spot at the national championships was in 2015, which was also the last season that both programs attended the national meet together. The men went on to finish 19th in that season, while the women took 18th. Since then, the women have also attended the nation's top meet four more times, reaching their best finish in program history last season in fifth.
Minnesota was one of four men's Big Ten teams selected for the big dance, joining automatic qualifiers Wisconsin and at-large selections Michigan and Michigan State. The women's side of things saw the same four Big Ten programs selected as well, with Minnesota and Wisconsin earning automatic bids and Michigan and Michigan State taking at-large spots.
Saturday's championship will be hosted by Florida State University, and will be held at Apalachee Regional Park. The women's 6K race will start things off at 9:20 a.m. CT, followed by the men's 10K at 10:10 a.m. CT.
