11/13/2021 5:11:00 PM | Women's Basketball

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota (1-1, 0-0 B1G) will look to build off its first victory of the season when George Washington (1-1, 0-0 A-10) comes to Williams Arena on Sunday afternoon. The game will be available to stream on B1G+ starting at 2 p.m. Fans can also find the game on KFAN+ with Justin Gaard and Lynnette Sjoquist.

ABOUT THIS GAME
  • Sunday afternoon will be just the second time the Colonials and the Golden Gophers have met but it is the second time in two years the two have faced off. The only other meeting came back in 2019 when the Gophers traveled to Washington and took down George Washington 83-50.
  • Four current student-athletes on the Gophers side and four Colonials played in that game two years ago with Sara Scalia leading all scorers in that game with 23.
  • George Washington is coming off a 75-38 loss to No. 24 Virginia Tech on Thursday and defeated American in their season opener on Nov. 9.
  • Head coach Lindsay Whalen, who is in her fourth season as head coach of her alma mater, holds a record of 23-3 against non-conference opponents in the regular season.

GOPHER NOTABLES
  • Minnesota is wrapping up its busy first week of the season with George Washington after picking up the team's first victory of the season on Friday night at Arizona State.
  • Against Arizona State junior guard Jasmine Powell scored all 21 of her points in the second half and in overtime to lead Minnesota to the win. She scored 10 points in the third quarter and connected on a career-high nine field goals in the win. Powell stuffed the stat sheet by grabbing a game-high nine rebounds, eight on the defensive glass, while also handing out five assists for the second-straight game.
  • Another notable performance from Minnesota's first win of the season included Edina, Minn., native Bailey Helgren having a breakout game on the boards. She gathered eight rebounds, four on the offensive end, and had a steal and crucial second-half block. Helgren converted on her first bucket in the Maroon and Gold and played just under 30 minutes in the victory over the Sun Devils.
  • Scalia's streak of at least one 3-pointer made was snapped against Arizona State on Friday at 17 games. During her 17 game three-point streak she had five games with at least four made and a career-best six vs. Purdue on Jan. 28, 2021. With one streak over, a new one has begun with Scalia pushing her double figures scoring streak to 15 games with her 13-point performance in the overtime win.
  • Minnesota faces one of the toughest schedules in the country with up to 13 NCAA Tournament teams from last season on the schedule and Minnesota's opponent win percentage (.582 in 2020-21) is the highest among any other schedule in the Big Ten.
  • Minnesota recently announced its 2022 signing class on National Signing Day with head coach Lindsay Whalen welcoming in the No. 4 ranked recruiting class in the nation according to Jr. All Stars. Minnesota's four signees include Mara Braun (Wayzata, Minn.), Amaya Battle (Hopkins, Minn.), Mallory Heyer (Chaska, Minn.) and Niamya Holloway (Eden Prairie, Minn.).
  • University of Minnesota head women's basketball coach Lindsay Whalen announced on Nov. 1, that sophomore guard Katie Borowicz (Roseau, Minn.) will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery today to repair a non-athletic related injury.
  • After playing through foul trouble against Jacksonville Kadi Sissoko bounced back with a 14-point performance on the road against Arizona State. She got Minnesota's offense going in the second half with back-to-back buckets right out of the locker room and scored 10 of her 14 between the second half and overtime. She also grabbed six rebounds for the second-straight game.
  • Now in her fourth season as the head coach of the Golden Gophers Lindsay Whalen improved her overtime record to 4-0 with Friday's win. Her record against non-conference opponents during the regular season is now at 23-3 and her record in the month of November is 12-2.
