MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota cross country programs tallied yet another appearance among the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's National Coaches' Poll this week, with the women coming in at No. 5 for the second straight week and the men falling to No. 27, as was announced by the USTFCCCA Monday afternoon.
This week's installment of the season-long rankings came after the 2021 NCAA Midwest Regionals last Friday, Nov. 12 in Iowa City, Iowa. There, the women secured a first place finish behind five All-Region performances, while the men finished fourth with five runners scoring within the top-35 spots.
A pack of three Gophers led the women's squad at the regional meet, with Bethany Hasz, Abby Kohut-Jackson and Megan Hasz registering a 4-5-6 finish for the Maroon and Gold. Anastasia Korzenowski and Jaycie Thomsen claimed the final two All-Region finishes for the Gopher women with 12th and 18th place finishes, respectively.
The men's side featured two All-Region performances as well, with Alec Basten and Matt Wilkinson taking seventh and 25th, respectively. The final three scoring Gophers all finished within 10 spots of All-Region consideration, with Jack Manderscheid taking 26th, Owen Hoeft finishing 30th and Khalid Hussein rounding it out in 32nd.
The fifth place ranking for the Gopher women put them atop the Big Ten once again, leading No. 13 Wisconsin, No. 17 Michigan and No. 19 Michigan State. On the men's side of things, Minnesota ranked third among the four ranked Big Ten teams, falling behind No. 8 Wisconsin and No. 14 Michigan and leading No. 30 Michigan State.
Both sides of the program held their same spots in the Midwest regional standings, with the women coming in at No. 1 and the men remaining No. 4.
As a result of their performances at the midwest regional, both sides of the program earned a bid to the 2021 NCAA Championships next week in Tallahassee, Fla. The national meet will kick off with the women's 6K race at 9:20 a.m. CT, followed by the men's 10K championship at 10:10 a.m. CT. Both races will be held at Apalachee Regional Park.
