Hasz Claims Seventh as Gophers Close Out Season at NCAA Championships

11/20/2021 1:01:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Men's Track & Field, Women's Cross Country, Women's Track & Field

Bethany Hasz, Megan Hasz and Abby Kohut-Jackson all claimed top-5 program 6K times as the Gopher women claimed their second best team finish in school history.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 5/27 University of Minnesota Cross Country program wrapped up their 2021 season today at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Fla., with the women bringing home a seventh place finish (313) while the men claimed 21st (518).

Saturday's finish was the second highest in program history for the Minnesota women's team after claiming fifth a season ago, and their fifth time breaking into the top-10 at the NCAA Championships dating back to 1983.

The men's side improved six spots from their national ranking entering Saturday's championships to record their eighth-highest finish of this century in 21st. In their last NCAA appearance in 2015, the men took 19th in the team standings.

The best finish of the day for the Maroon and Gold belonged once again to Bethany Hasz, who improved on her 2020 national championship showing with a seventh-place, All-American performance in the women's 6K race. B. Hasz finished in a program record time of 19:36.4, blasting by the previous record by nearly 20 seconds to earn a tie for the highest NCAA Championship finish in program history with Megan Duwell, who did so in 2009.

She now holds two of the Gophers' best NCAA finishes in school history after finishing eighth in the same event at the 2020-21 championships in March of this year to claim the first All-American nod of her career. She also finished within the top-100 in both 2017 and 2018, taking 70th and 48th in each, respectively.

Second for the Gophers and 23rd in the individual finishes column was B. Hasz's twin sister, Megan Hasz, who crossed the finish line in a blazing fast time of her own at 19:48.9, the second fastest in Gophers history behind Bethany's performance today. The finish earned the Alexandria, Minn. native the first All-American nod of her career.

The Hasz twins were not the only two All-Americans for the Gophers Saturday, as Abby Kohut-Jackson claimed a national honor for herself with a 39th place finish when she crossed the line in a final time of 19:56.8, missing the program's previous 6K record by just over a second. Still, the performance gave her the fourth fastest time in program history, as well as the first All-American nod of her career.

Anastasia Korzenowski came in fourth for the Maroon and Gold at 148th in a time of 20:48.1, followed by Jaycie Thomsen, who rounded out the scoring in 172nd (20:56.3). Completing the Gophers lineup were Tate Sweeney in 223rd (21:32.4) and Carissa Dock in 229th (21:42.5).

The men's side saw three Gophers break into the top-100 spots, and were led by team captain Alec Basten, who laid down the eighth fastest 10K time in program history to claim 69th in 29:54.2. Basten just missed his personal best time of 29:48.6, which currently stands as the sixth fastest in school history. Saturday's performance was also his first time breaking into the top-100 in career history, after finishing 166th in his only other NCAA appearance in 2019.

Finishing just behind Basten was Minnesota newcomer and former NCAA DIII Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, Matt Wilkinson. Wilkinson crossed the line in the 10th-fastest time in program history (29:56.8), good for a 72nd place finish.

Third in for the Maroon and Gold was junior Khalid Hussein in 92nd, whose time of 30:06.9 would have broken into the top-15 if not for Basten and Wilkinson's finishes before him. His time stands as the 16th fastest in program history, less than a second out of the record list.

Jack Manderscheid was the fourth Gopher finisher of the race in 174th (30:49.9), followed by Owen Hoeft in 201st (31:09.3) to round out the scoring for Minnesota. Ethan Cannon (31:26.5) and Eli Hoeft (31:44.1) finished out the Gophers' lineup in 213th and 226th, respectively.

NC State claimed the women's team title with 84 points, while BYU's Whittni Orton took the women's individual title in 19:25.4. The second individual title of the day belonged to BYU as well, as Conner Mantz earned the crown in 28:33.1, while the men's team title went to Northern Arizona with 92 points.

Minnesota finished among the top-two of the four Big Ten programs in attendance on either side of today's championships. The women earned the top Big Ten finish, leading 12th place Wisconsin, 16th place Michigan State and 22nd place Michigan. The men came in second, falling behind 11th place Wisconsin and beating out 25th place Michigan and 30th place Michigan State.
