MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota (6-3, 0-0 B1G) scored 20 or more points in all four quarters to outrun the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) (1-4, 0-0 C-USA) 81-52, on Sunday afternoon at Williams Arena. Junior guard Jasmine Powell erupted for 23 points and added eight assists and six rebounds to lead the Golden Gophers past the Roadrunners.Â
Along with Powell, sophomore guard Alexia Smith scored in double figures for the first time this season by posting a career-high 14 points off the bench. Smith headed up the Gopher bench that scored 50 points in the win, the most points by the Gophers bench since Nov. 16, 2017, when the team had 56 against VCU at home in a 108-63 win.Â
After a slow start on the offensive end the Gophers rebounded to score 20 points in the final 5:14 of the period and took a 20-11 lead into the second quarter. Smith was the aggressor off the bench early, scoring five points in the quarter while sixth-year senior Gadiva Hubbard hit a pair of threes to help jumpstart the Maroon and Gold attack.Â
The second quarter extended a Minnesota 16-2 run that ended the first quarter into a 32-4 run that saw the Gophers lead by 23 points. Klarke Sconiers came off the bench and provided some nice shots on the block, scoring four in the period. Powell's spectacular night started to take form during the second quarter with eight points in the quarter. By halftime Powell had amassed 13 points while handing out five assists with zero turnovers to help Minnesota head into the halftime break up 41-18.
The Roadrunners didn't quit in the second half, scoring 34 of their 52 points in the second half, with 17 both in the third and fourth quarter. Despite UTSA's best effort, the Gophers offense was too much, scoring 20 in both the third and fourth quarters with the bench scoring 28 of the 40 points in the second half.Â
Notably in the second half was Alanna Micheaux who finished with six points and four rebounds. Before missing a shot at the end of the shot clock in the fourth, Micheaux had made seven straight shots going back to the Bradley game. On top of Micheaux, Hubbard finished with nine off the bench while Laura Bagwell Katalinich had six and Caroline Strande and Erin Hedman added five points each.Â
As a team the Golden Gophers lead was as much as 33 during the contest, with the team shooting a season-high 30 free throws while making 23 of them. Minnesota's defense held UTSA to 28.8 percent shooting from the floor and for the first time under head coach Lindsay Whalen, the Gophers did not allow a single three-point field goal to be made.Â
Two games through a four-game home stand the Gophers next will have three Power 5 opponents in a row starting with the University of North Carolina (6-0, 0-0 ACC) on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m. The game will be Minnesota's first on the Big Ten Network this season.
