12/12/2021 2:33:00 PM | Women's Basketball

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota (6-6, 0-2 B1G) battled but ultimately dropped a tough road test to No. 13/11 Michigan (10-1, 2-0 B1G) on Sunday afternoon in Ann, Arbor, Mich. Jasmine Powell finished with 19 points to lead the Gophers offensively while Sara Scalia finished with 13.

As a team the Golden Gophers nearly matched their season-best field goal percentage at 46.9 percent (23-of-49) and shot 43.8 percent from three (7-of-16). On top of her 19 points, Powell finished with eight rebounds and had a pair of assists in the defeat back in her home state of Michigan. Also returning home was Alanna Micheaux who finished with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting in her first career start.

Michigan jumped on the Gophers early with an 8-1 run to start the game before the Gophers battled back by scoring seven of the final 10 points of the quarter to trail 17-11. Late in the quarter the Gophers turned up their defensive pressure to force five first-quarter turnovers.

The second quarter the Maroon and Gold made a run by playing tight defense. Led by Deja Winters and company, the Gophers used a 7-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. Minnesota forced seven turnovers in the quarter and Powell, a Detroit, Mich., native, scored eight of her 13 first-half points to make the first-half push past the Wolverines. Powell capped off her impressive first half with a long-range three with under two seconds to go to give the Gophers a 33-29 halftime lead.

The third quarter proved to be the difference maker with the Gophers scoring just nine points to the Wolverines 17. A 15-2 run by the Wolverines gave the hosts a 44-38 lead and by the end of the quarter it was 46-42 in favor of the Maize and Blue.

The fourth quarter Michigan erupted for 27 points and outscored the Gophers by eight in the final period of action. Scalia erupted late for the Maroon and Gold, scoring eight in the final period to get to her season average of 13 points.
