TheĀ University of Minnesota women's golf team welcomes five newcomers to the team for the 2021-22 season. GopherSports.com will sit down with each of them to get to know them better as they compete in their first season in the Maroon and Gold.
Next up, it is Boram Jung. Jung is a native of Chonburi, Thailand and attended the American School of Bangkok. Academically, Jung earned the honor roll award for a GPA of 3.5 or higher. She started playing golf when she was nine years old and became competitive when she was 10. Jung won a gold medal for a match-play competition at the 2017 'Harmony Group' APAC-US Junior Golf event. Continuing on her successful streak, Jung tied for seventh at the 2018 SINGHA Thailand Junior World Golf Championship and placed fourth at the 2018 Shrewsbury Invitational. In 2019 at the 12th Annual FCG International, she tied for 22nd in the competition field.Ā Jung tied for 17th at the 85th Thailand Ametuer Open and had an impressive outing at the 2019 SINGHA Thailand Junior World Golf Championship, finishing tied for eleventh. A highlight of her career, Jung represented Team Chonburi at the Thailand National Youth games and won a gold medal for the team competition.
GopherSports: How long have you been playing golf and who introduced you to the sport?
Boram Jung: I have been playing golf for ten years. My dad introduced me to golf when I was in the fourth grade. Personally, he was interested in golf and enjoyed watching the Golf Channel on television. He wanted me to try out a sport or an activity during summer break, so he decided to find a golf coach to teach me how to play golf.
GS: When did you realize you'd like to play collegiate golf?
BJ: I realized I would like to play collegiate golf when I was in grade nine. During that time, it was my first time traveling to the United States and participating in many golf tournaments. I enjoyed my experiences of playing golf in the States and had a goal of attending university and playing golf in the States since then. Also, I was surrounded by my friends who played collegiate golf in the States. They always told me how much they enjoyed their experiences of being a part of the golf program.
GS: What drew you to play for the University of Minnesota?
BJ: I liked how the school supports the sport program, and I knew I could improve and further my athletic career here. I never visited Minnesota before making the decision to attend the school here, however I did a lot of research and found that the school provided a competitive
golf program and great academics.
GS: How has your experience with the Gophers been so far?
BJ: My experience with the Gophers has been great. I am surrounded by nice, funny and supportive teammates. I have been enjoying practice and workout sessions with the team so far. My teammates always try to give me encouragement to make me feel motivated and push myself to work harder. It is my first year being far away from home, and there are a lot of things that I have learned. The people around me are always willing to help when I do not know something or need help.
GS: What would you say is the strongest part of your game?Ā
BJ: I would say my strongest part of my game is driver. I mostly hit my driver off the tee straight to where I aim. Also, I consistently make a lot of fairway hits in the round.
GS: What is one thing you'd like to improve upon?
BJ: One thing that I would like to improve is my short game. I noticed that during the round, there are regularly several times that I cannot save my putts or make ups and downs. However, I am working on my short game and hoping to see an improvement in this upcoming season.
GS: Is there anything you hope to achieve while playing for the Gophers?
BJ: While playing for the Gophers, I hope to gain new experiences that help me grow in my athletic career path. Playing collegiate golf has always been my passion and is a great start to pursue my golf career. In these four years, I believe there will be a lot of new experiences and opportunities to push and challenge myself to become a better player.
GS: What has been your impression of the John W. Mooty Practice Facility?
BJ: I am very grateful that the University of Minnesota provides an opportunity that allows us to practice our golf game indoors during winter. The hitting bays and short game areas are very new and they are always well taken care of. What impressed me the most is the equipment that we have at the facility, such as Trackman and Puttview, that help us improve and know the specific areas that we need to work on.
