MINNEAPOLIS -- Gophers alum and USA Hockey staple Gigi Marvin, a three-time Olympic medalist, announced her retirement from the international stage on Thursday.
The Warroad, Minn. native played 13 years on the international stage with Team USA, which she represented in three Olympic Games, seven IIHF world championships, and nine Four Nations Cups. Marvin's incredibly decorated international resume includes a 2018 Olympic Gold Medal, two Olympic Silver Medals, five IIHF world championship titles, and 74 points (24g-50a) over 126 total games.
"Playing for Team USA was such a joy and I'm incredibly grateful for all the friendships formed and memories made," said Marvin. "I loved competing alongside teammates who not only relentlessly pursued excellence within themselves; but made everyone around them better. Thanks to the Lord, my family and friends, and to all who surrounded me with love, prayers, and support throughout my career."
Marvin played with Minnesota from 2005-09 and racked up 196 points (87g-108a) in 152 career games. Her time with the Gophers saw her finish as a two-time top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award and take home WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2008-09. She is also one of nine Gophers in program history to be named WCHA Rookie of the year (2006).
"Gigi was everything you want in a player and teammate," said head coach Brad Frost – who coached Marvin throughout her time at Minnesota. "She cared deeply about her teammates and always brought great passion and energy to the rink. Gigi was born with hockey in her veins. She accomplished so much in her career and will always be looked at as one of the best Gophers to play at the U."
Marvin will be honored prior to Monday's (Dec. 20) U.S.-Canada game at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn.
