Minnesota set a new school record with a 96 percent graduation rate, per the NCAA.

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota continues to raise its academic standards as Maroon & Gold student-athletes posted another school record on Thursday, according to the NCAA's newest Graduation Success Rate (GSR).

With a 96 percent graduation rate, Minnesota shares the highest measurement among Power Five conference public institutions with South Carolina while Gopher Athletics has now recorded the four highest GSR statistics in school history over the last four years with 94 percent in both 2020 and 2019 and a 93 percent in 2018. The Maroon & Gold also rank second in the Big Ten in the current Graduation Success Rate data behind Northwestern.

This year's GSR primarily focuses on the six-year cohort who came to the 'U' as freshman in 2014. The GSR shows the percentage of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree within six years of starting school. It represents data from first-time freshmen, student-athletes who entered at midyear, and student-athletes who transferred into the University of Minnesota between 2011 and 2014. It excludes student-athletes who transfer from the university in good academic standing.

"It's no surprise that our student-athletes display the same level of dedication to earning their degrees as they do while representing the University of Minnesota in athletic competition," said JT Bruett, director of the Lindahl Academic Center. "They have continued to raise the academic standard for Gopher Athletics year after year and score after score, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts."

The NCAA also released Federal Graduation Rates (FGR) in its report, which categorizes student-athletes who transfer from or leave their initial school for any reason as non-graduates, even if they leave in good academic standing or subsequently graduate from another institution. For the 2014-15 cohort, Gopher Athletics had an 82 percent FGR. In the four-class average from 2011-2014, which was also the highest mark among Power Five conference public institutions along with Cal while ranking second in the Big Ten behind Northwestern.
